Providing Your Elderly Parents with the Best Care Possible

When your parents start to get a little older and you have the responsibility of your own children to think about, being able to provide them with the best quality of care possible seems somewhat out of the question. Luckily, there are several different options that you can consider which will help you to look after them as best as you can, which can improve your loved ones life whilst giving you ultimate peace of mind at the same time. So, if you want to provide your elderly parents with the best quality of care possible as they age, then read on to uncover some of the greatest ideas that you can implement today!

Can They Keep Some Independence?

If your parents are able to partially take care of themselves, it’s good to help them keep as much independence as possible. You can setup your will easily if there are no illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimer’s present, so encourage them to do this on their own, as well as other regular paperwork to keep their mind occupied and working as the years pass. There are services available that provide part time professional careers that can visit your parents home and help them with some basic tasks like cleaning, getting dressed and cooking meals, to ensure that they can get ready for each day and use the rest of their time productively rather than struggling.

However, you can involve them in the day-to-day running of their lives if their health and strength allow for it. You can ask them to plan meals, help fold the laundry, and accompany you to the grocery store. Furthermore, let them decide what radio programs, television shows, and music they want to listen to. Your elderly parents also need to maintain active social lives to remain independent. As such, help them continue their routine activities. You may need to invest in personal mobility scooters if they do have difficulty getting around, but the benefits of enabling them to visit relatives, friends, and attend social functions are invaluable. Also, respect your parents’ decision to live independently in their own home. Still, it would help to support their decision with a personal alarm system that can help them call for help during emergencies.

Finding Full-Time Care

With so many negative stories in the news of elderly people having such bad experiences inside care homes, it can be really tough to decide which provider you can trust to look after your parents properly. Never simply choose the first one you see, as this may be a bad idea that you will regret in the future. Take your time to visit each residential home and research what’s being offered at each different establishment, as well as finding reviews from previous users of the service to identify the true quality. Bring your parent along to see which one they choose as their favorite, and see what their specific requirements are in case you missed anything off your list. Introduce them slowly by daily visits, then increase the time in small increments until they are fully moved into their new home.

Visit them on a regular basis and always question the care that they are provided with to see whether they have encountered and problems during their experience, and always take them seriously no matter what they say. To enhance their sense of security, consider setting up a personal emergency response system for seniors in case they need help when you’re not around. If you have the time, take them out on day trips to different locations to keep them inside the loop of the outside world, as it can feel as though they are trapped within the care home especially during their first few months after moving in.

Providing your elderly parents with the best care possible may mean that you relieve yourself of some responsibilities to let the professionals take over, but this will do nothing but improve their quality of life if you make sure that you choose the best providers!

  • Entrusting the care of your parents to someone else is one of the hardest things to do. I am not sure I could ever do it. I am fortunate that I am able to care for mine completely and don't have to rely on anyone else.
