Unusual Food Trends You Should Know About

An unusual feature, food trends are as funny and exciting as they are healthy and delicious, while there are some others which are confusing and strange! For years, the communal awareness has been influenced by the next best thing when it comes to food and its unique trends.

Trending History

Back in the 1930s, popularly called the Jell-O Salads, the congealed salad were quite a rage. Not so easy to stir up, you’d still put anything with Jell-O in a mold. Some of the most noteworthy congealed eats included a shaped mayo salad, olive mold chicken salad, Oriental Compote and more. In 2017, edible glitter started ruling the food charts, with a popular Indian coffee chain using edible glitter for their cappuccinos to make it more appealing visually. The old drinks have now been twisted with a modern add, like in the case of this colonial dessert drink, the Syllabub, which was made by mixing an acid, a cream and wine in the 18th century and its 21st century version’s now served by mixing a heavily whipped cream, lemon, sherry, a dash of wine and some sugar, along with some spinach juice.

Weird Treats

Owing to the raging social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, most food trends ride the popularity charts basis their appearance in addition to their taste. For instance, galaxy ideated desserts not only look amazing but include a varied range of candy apples, cakes, cookies and lollipops, looking as if they’ve been tweaked out of a night sky! Introduced in Canberra, Australia, the popularity of freakshakes, spread all across the globe for its ‘over the top’ and indulgent dessert that has a container overfilled with a milkshake, topped with cream, cake and then drenched with sauce with decorative bits of waffles, candies, bars and more!

Similarly, an iced tea topped with whipped cheese may sound really weird, but born out of Taiwan this particular fad was started by using powdered cheese in the beginning and then experimented with a variety of teas and cheese.

Latest Food Trends

With an assortment of wacky to delicious, here are some of the most delectable food trends you can enjoy in 2020-21.

  • Initiated in 2019 and now more accessible, plant based meats have become appealing to a lot of people and have generated quite an interest. Weirdly so, with brands like the Burger King having burgers without any animal protein in their menu, the future of plant burgers seems quite promising!
  • Nutritionally heavy, high in fibre and beneficial in terms of reducing cholesterol, risks associated with heart or those leading to diabetes and stroke, ancient grains like teff, faro, millet, spelt, and bulger have not only added variety to the plate but also make them a wonderful option for people looking to restrict their gluten intake.
  • Different legumes, seeds and nuts come with different textures and profiling. While peanut and almond butters have been around for years, there’s a new variety of macadamia, chickpea and watermelon seeds added to the butter menu which not only taste good but are nutritionally quite powerful, albeit high in fat.
  • Labelled Matcha by some, Ube is a Filipino Yam that’s high in Vit.C, fibre, potassium and anthocyanin, an antioxidant. A pretty purple dessert for an ice cream flavour, Ube is mostly made of sweet condensed milk, sugar or cream
