7 Tips for Building Your Career as a Mom

Being a mom is a full-time job, so it can be tough to find time to build a career while raising kids. After all, with all the time and money you invest in your family, there’s not much left for a career. However, it’s never too late to get started on your professional goals and when there’s a will, there’s a way. Check out these 7 tips for building a career as a mom.

1. Make a Schedule

Finding time away from your family can be tough, but it’s something you have to do if you want to build a career. Take some time to create a schedule that you can manage. While you want to spend time with your kids and be there for them, you also need to make sure you have time to further your education and work hard. Write your schedule out on a calendar and post it on the fridge so the whole family can see when you’re available.

2. Talk with Your Children

If you’ve worked at home before, you know how tough it can be for children to understand when you’re busy. No matter how old your children are, make sure you have a talk with them before you start working to build a career. It’s important that your children understand how important your professional goals are to you, and that you need time to work on them.

3. Find a Work-Life Balance

As important as your career may be, it’s not worth sacrificing your family life over. This is why it’s important to find a healthy work-life balance, which is something you need to consider when creating a schedule. Not only is it important to spend lots of time with family, but you also don’t want to overexert yourself by working or going to school too much. Avoid working yourself to the bone and when you are feeling the pressure, consider finding a local yoga class or meditating to reset.

4. Consider CE Classes

Education is a great way to build a career, which is why you should consider investing  in courses. CE classes offer a simple way to expand your education and further your career, especially if you already have some type of licensing or education. If you’re going to take CE classes, make sure you have a cozy desk to study at in a quiet room. It should be fairly easy to find something near you with a quick online search for terms like Florida continuing education classes.

5. Network

When it comes to any type of career success, networking plays a role. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is a true statement for many industries, so use school and work as an opportunity to meet new people and network. A relationship you build now could turn into a huge career opportunity in the next few years, so keep your options open. To find networking events, look for groups that organize networking events in Boston or wherever you live.

6. Create a Home Workspace

You can’t expect to get a lot done if you don’t have a spot to work at home. Whether you’re taking classes or simply working at home, having a home workspace is essential to building your career when you’re a mom. Make sure you have a spacious desk with a comfortable chair, as well as a nice lamp to keep the area well-lit.

7. Try To-Do Lists

Staying on top of small tasks can be tough when you have small children. One simple way to make sure you’re doing what you need to do is to make a to-do list for each day. You can hang a whiteboard on the wall for list-making, or you can make a list on your smartphone or laptop so you can take it with you.

Building a career isn’t easy when you have kids to raise, but it’s worth giving you and your family a good life. If you want to build your career as a mom, invest in your education, create a workspace, and try to find time to work and learn when you can. While it’ll take some adjusting, it’ll be well worth it in the end.
