Purchasing a house to raise your family in is an exciting milestone! Although,  certain responsibilities come with being a homeowner. Here are 10 things you should know about owning a home. 

1.  Hold Off on Making Big Changes Right Away

While renovation projects enhance your space, they can also be costly and time-consuming. Also, you may have to temporarily relocate, which can impact your kid’s daily routine. 

Keep in mind your tastes might change over time, so try not to commit to any alterations right away. Give yourself at least six months to a year before making any major home improvements. This way, you can figure out which projects are best for your family. When you’re ready to do renovations, consider upgrading your kitchen or bathroom to increase your house’s resale value. 

2.  Research School Districts

Before purchasing a home, It’s essential to learn more about the school district in that area. For your kids, having a good education is critical. Having proper education opens many doors for them down the line.

Once you find your dream home, it’s a good idea to learn more about the surrounding area. Think about things like if your home is near a busy road, will there be further expansions. Also, are homes in your neighborhood selling quickly, and what types of people are moving in. 

To find out this information, read city council and county commissioners’ planning agendas. You can also speak with real estate brokers or your local chamber of commerce.

Also, do some research on the value of your home. Understand current trends within your local real estate market. This can give you a better idea of how to improve your home’s resale value.

4.  Research Your Homeowners Association

The Homeowners Association (HOA) oversees the majority of residential communities. You want to learn more about the rules and regulations they impose. There may be certain restrictions on how high your fence can be or what type of vehicles can park on the street.

5.  Check Crawl Spaces and Attics

While your attic may just be a space to store unused items, you still want to examine it every so often. Look for any signs of leaks, mold, or bug infestations. You may also want to do some light dusting to improve your indoor air quality. Taking care of these issues saves you the stress of having to do costly repairs down the road.

9. Maintain Your Outdoor Landscape

The exterior of your home is just as important as the exterior. With so much to focus on inside your home, your outdoor space may not be your top priority. However, enhancing your backyard can make it a better space for entertaining. 

To maintain your landscape, mow and water your grass, trim your trees and remove excess weeds. Also, properly fertilizing your lawn can keep it looking healthy. To prepare the space, start with soil aeration and water your lawn regularly. 

10.  Inspect Your Roof for Leaks

Rain can build up moisture on your roof, leading to leaks. Have your roof inspected by a professional twice a year to keep your family safe. 

You can also do part of the examination yourself by looking out for the following: 

  • Cracked caulk
  • Bulking, blistering, or curling shingles
  • Broken or worn rubber around vent pipes
  • Missing or damaged chimney cap
  • Masses of moss or lichen

If you notice any of these issues, get them fixed as soon as possible to save money on costly repairs.
