How to Become a Proactive Screenwriter

To become a seasoned screenwriter requires a lot of dedication of time and practice to perfect the art. The more you practice, you will undoubtedly perfect your storytelling skills and break into the industry.

Award-winning author Daniel Handler advises that once you have learned the basics of screenwriting, you need to get into the nitty-gritty of perfecting your skills. Here are the steps Daniel Handler advises you to follow.

Take Notes During the Day

When you begin writing a story that you are passionate about, you will be thinking about it wherever you go, when doing some chores or when watching a movie. This is an excellent aspect of story writing which should be encouraged. Usually, when you have an incomplete task that you are working on, the mind will unconsciously toil away from it. This will happen most of the time when you have started a screenplay writing project.

However, there are times an idea will come out, but you end up forgetting it by the time you sit down to document it. This is why it is advisable to keep notes or carry a small notebook to write these ideas. Be mindful of ideas that come out throughout the day and write them down that you think will be relevant in your work.

Make Screen Writing a Habit

Screenwriting is a long marathon and not some sprint. If you want to become a writer and only rely on fleeting inspiration and passion, you will only do a few pages and be intimidated by what is remaining to complete the script, then you will abandon that work.

By making screenwriting a habit, most of the time, you will slip faster into writing mode whenever you feel like it, and you will end up producing so many pages during a day. Further, you will be motivated to take concrete steps to finish your piece of the draft. It would be best to write a bit daily than to write so many pages in a single day and burn yourself out.

Do not give up halfway through the Journey

Many beginners in the screenwriting sector make the common mistake of giving up easily. They start a draft without having a mountain of inspiration and excitement. By the time they are halfway through, they are lost, and they end up giving up. You will end up with so many unfinished drafts and nothing to show for the end product.

Supposing you are this kind of a person, set a challenge that you will give up halfway through the line under no circumstances. Get to the end and do not rewrite anything until you finish.
