3 Fun Outdoor Activities for the Whole Family

These days, computers, video games and smartphones can keep kids entertained 24/7, but sometimes it’s good for them to get some fresh air and vitamin D. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our favorite outdoor activities along with a printable to help you make your own family activity jar. Read on for some great ideas for family fun.

1. Going for a Picnic

When you go for a picnic, it gives you an excuse to soak in some sun and eat delicious foods. Whether you lay a blanket in front of your yard, at the park or even at the beach, your picnic is sure to put a smile on your kids’ faces. You might enjoy it so much that weekly or monthly picnics become a fun family tradition.

2. Backyard Camping

All it takes is a tent and sleeping bags to transform your backyard into a campsite. For some extra fun, you can build a firepit, tell scary stories and roast marshmallows with your kiddos. Once it’s dark, everyone can snuggle up in their sleeping bags and gaze at the twinkling stars in the sky.

For some, backyard camping might not be as fun if you don’t have privacy. If that’s the case for you, you may want to look into affordable ways to cover your fence for peace of mind.

3. Playing Hide-and-Go-Seek

Hide-and-go-seek is a classic game that never goes out of style. Simply have one “seeker” close their eyes and count to 60 while the rest of your players hide. If you’re in a wide-open area, it’s a good idea to establish boundaries of where you can and can’t hide. Whoever is found first by the seeker gets to be the seeker for the next round.

Creating an Outdoor Activity Mason Jar

If you want to keep the good times rolling, creating a family activity mason jar is the way to go. Simply print out our family-friendly activities below, cut out each square and put them inside a mason jar. Then have one of your kids pull an activity from the jar. Whatever they pull, that’s your activity for the day.

If you’d like, you could even write some of your own custom activities on pieces of paper and drop those in the jar as well.

There’s nothing better than taking a day to soak in the sun with your family. Whether you go for a picnic, camp outside or play hide-and-go-seek, there’s no shortage of fun activities in the great outdoors.
