If you’ve finally closed on your new dream home and moving day is approaching, you probably have a hundred different worries on your mind. For families, ensuring your children transition into their new home seamlessly may be a huge stressor.
Uprooting a child’s life is never easy, but there’s plenty you can do to make the process as easy as possible. Keep reading for some helpful tips!
Make moving day as peaceful as possible
Anyone who’s ever moved knows how physically and emotionally stressing the process can be. If you can, send your kids to play with a friend, grandparent, or babysitter for the day. This will keep them safe from getting hurt while you’re distracted and will also ensure they’re out of the way while you’re moving heavy furniture.
If this isn’t possible, consider getting some extra help in the moving process by hiring movers or plan some activities to keep your kids occupied and distracted. This could even be an opportunity to get your kids involved with the moving process or allow them to explore their new neighborhood. Once you are settled for the evening why not order in some food and do a few jigsaw puzzles? It will help you to eat things calm and you haven’t got to worry about cooking.
Let the kids help with design choices
By enlisting your children’s help with the decorating decisions, you’re helping them realize this new home belongs to them as well. Give them the freedom to make some decisions, let them decorate their own rooms, pick out wall paint with them, and even let them choose furniture placement so they can feel some ownership over their new home.
This is a perfect opportunity to tackle renovations and improvements that’ll add value to your home, while making them feel like they’re part of the process.
Get back into your routine as quickly as possible
While moving can certainly throw a wrench in your normal schedule, try to get the kids back on their regular schedule as soon as possible so life feels more normal. You can also add new transitions, like nightly strolls around the neighborhood, to help the house feel more like a home.
Explore the area with them
If you’re moving to a completely different town or neighborhood, your children may need help settling into their new surroundings. Explore the local parks, take them out to the local ice cream shop, schedule playdates with other kids in the neighborhood, and do everything you can to help them get to know their surroundings.
Everything will be new and different for a while, but the sooner your kids start getting to know their bearings, the quicker they’ll adapt to their new home.
Give it some time
Your kids won’t settle into your new home overnight. Some kids might transition quicker than others, but the process takes time and you should expect some growing pains as they get accustomed to the new property. Don’t panic if your children demand to return to their real home or can’t sleep in their new bedroom.
Sometimes time is the best medicine, but talk to a trusted real estate agent if you’re still concerned, as they’ve dealt with plenty of families making this transition and can provide the best advice!
