How to Manage a Workplace Injury

It’s something that nobody wants to happen to them, and yet workplace injuries are surprisingly common, and often appear to be getting even more so. If you are keen to avoid getting injured at work, then you will find that being careful, working slowly, and going along with the rules of health and safety will help a lot. But if you do get injured anyway, it can help a lot to know what you should do about it to get through the situation as well as possible. Let’s take a look at an approach that you might want to take here.

Get Help

If you are in pain and you need help, you should call for it as soon as possible. How you do this might depend a lot on the situation, including where you are and whether your supervisor is available and close to hand, for instance. Getting help is the first step, however, as you may well need to have first aid administered. It might also be, of course, that you will need an ambulance to come, as it all depends on the situation at hand. But getting help takes priority before anything else that needs to happen.

Report It

At some point shortly after the incident occurs, it needs to be reported. This does not necessarily need to be done by you, it’s just something that needs to happen. But you should make sure that you are having it reported, whether you do it yourself or someone else does it. That report can be useful and vital in avoiding the same kind of thing happening again in the future, so it’s really essential that this is done. It’s something that will need to stay on file for quite a few years, and the details need to be recorded as accurately as possible.

The Recovery Stage

Once you are recovering, you are going to perhaps find yourself at a loose end. It might be that you have to take some time off work as a result of your injury. If so, it’s important to remember that you have a number of rights you should defend here. For instance, you have statutory sick pay that you are entitled to, as well as the option to get a personal injury attorney, should you think that you need one. But most of all, you need to make sure that you are trying to recover as well as you can.

Returning To Work

When the time comes to return to work – once you are recovered enough, and you feel well and able to – then you need to make sure you approach this in the right way as well. After all, returning to work is going to be one of the real tests as to how much you have recovered, so it’s something that you should certainly think about for sure. Returning to work should be taken slowly and carefully, and your employer should make any adjustments to the work that they can to facilitate this.
