There’s nothing like seeing how excited Christmas can get your little ones, especially those who are still young enough to feel the full force of all that festive magic. While they will undoubtedly have no problem getting excited for the big day, if you’re looking to keep them busy or even tire them out on Christmas Eve, here are a few ways you can make the day fun, and keep the kids busy.
Head out for a wintery walk
Depending on where you live, there might be a lot going on during Christmas Eve. Taking a walk down to the town center, around the park, or wherever you’re most likely to spot community activity can help you see carolers, Christmas decorations in all their splendor, and more. What’s more, it’s a good way to expend some energy, making it easier to get some sleep at night.
Get baking
There’s no better time of the year than winter to get the oven on and no shortage of festive baked treats that you can make. Gingerbread is, of course, the classic, and the perfect mix of baking and crafts to keep your child entertained for hours. But they can play a helping hand in baking all sorts of treats, whether it’s to eat now or to enjoy as a Christmas day dessert.
Play some festive games
The right seasonal games can certainly help keep the kids busy while ensuring that the Christmas spirit is very much going. There are plenty of party and family games you can play, such as Pictionary, but if you have a smaller family, then even simple fun activities like a Christmas word search can be enough to hold your kid’s attention for a while. If it’s something they can play themselves, it can give you a little while to rest, too.
Put on your favorite Christmas movies
There are few things more traditional on Christmas Eve than finding the right Christmas movie to put on. For a lot of families, there’s none better than The Muppet’s Christmas Carol, but from Elf to the Grinch, there are plenty of options to choose from. Just make sure that you don’t make the error of choosing the slightly more grown-up ones like It’s A Wonderful Life or Scrooged. These can go over the heads of very young kids.
Read a Christmas book with them
As the day is getting later, you might want them to start calming down a bit and, as such, getting them in a more passive mood is a good way to do that. Reading them some Christmas poems and stories before bedtime can be an excellent way to do that, nursing their excitement for the big day while turning the energy down, and getting them ready for bed.
With the tips above, you can make sure that the hours before bedtime will fly by. Just remember to remind your children that they have to go to bed early because of Santa’s arrival. That should give you some peace and quiet in the evening.
