So I am not creative when it comes to playing with my kids, and I admit I rely on games and toys that I buy. The problem with that though is it is expensive to keep buying games and toys, especially when kids get sick of them so quickly. Well the book “Great Games: 175 Games & Activities for Families, Groups, & Children” by Matthew Toone is a great start.
As the title states, it contains 175 games to play and the best part is that they can be changed up, played inside or outside, played with varying amounts of people, and offers creative changes. The games are all easy to understand, especially because the author uses characters in examples for the instructions. Each game explains how many people are needed, what supplies (if any) are needed, the rules, and variations. You may also recognize a few of the games, but I promise this book offers more than classic games we all already know.
I am so impressed with how organized this book is and how broken down it gets. The index of the book is just so detailed that it makes finding the right game to play so easy. The book is also broken down into Family & Group Games and Children’s Games, but every game can be modified depending on the number of players.
The book is a result of years of collecting, creating, and compiling games all while playing these games with his family. I liked that part, because it makes the games more personal and real. You also know that the games are going to be fun because they were played and created through family get togethers.
Now my boys are still little so they don’t follow directions or really understand games yet, but I have already tried out a few of them. I really though can’t wait to my boys are just a few years older and they really get into games and many of the games are geared towards probably ages 5 and up. We really enjoy the Quarter Team Toss and Strategic Bowling!
So whether you are looking for something for your family to do or if you are looking for new games for your get togethers, school, organization, or whatever, Great Games is definitely a book to check out. I can’t see getting bored with it anytime soon and it really is easy to understand.
