MY THOUGHTS:

My little guy has allergies and asthma and while nothing bothers him right now, I figure anything that would make life easier for him I would try.  Right now we have mattress and pillow covers in their room, but when the bed bug scare at hotels happened last year it got me thinking.  I started hearing about bed bug mattress covers and figured it couldn’t hurt.

Then I saw the Premium Bed Bug Proof Mattress Cover from Shop Bedding and realized it would solve a lot of our problems.  It is a cover that completely encloses the mattress by zipping it closed.  By enclosing the mattress, bed bugs and hatchlings (yuck!) are basically starved to death and therefore can’t escape and spread.  It is a soft fabric cover that doesn’t crinkle when you lay on it and you actually can’t even notice it under your sheets.  It can also be used on a box spring encasement as well.

For my son the cover will protect him from potential allergy outbreaks.  With the most common cause for allergies in humans being dust mites, a bed bug mattress cover protects mattresses from dust mites, pollens, molds, fungus, and bio-fluids.  So his mattress is protected as well as I can get!  I also love that its waterproof, breathable and fire-retardant.

I will say the only flaw I noticed is that while it waterproof, it may not be the best cover for a potty-training child since the fabric is not vinyl.  My son of course tested this out the first night.  I decided the benefits of the cover outweigh this flaw for us and decided to just place a vinyl pad on top of the cover so I didn’t have to keep unzipping and removing the mattress cover to wash it.  I really like the idea of the cover and now want one for each of our mattresses.  I thing this cover would be especially great for new mattresses so they are protected from the beginning, but I figure better late than never too!
