Fandango Tickets & Movie Review: “Cars 2” #gocars2

ABOUT:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car.  But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.  Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer).  Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.  The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.

MY THOUGHTS:

My husband and I took our two boys (3 and 4) last night to see the new Cars 2 movie and we loved it! First off we used the Fandango iPhone App (which you can read my review here on that) to purchase our tickets so we were able to proceed right to the ticket booth with no waiting!  It was so nice not to have to worry about lines or the show selling out.

I actually think I loved it the most but it was a long movie and just about bed time so I think that made my boys antsy.  This movie is so different from the original Cars movie as it features lots of new character, but of course most of the old friends, and while it does focus on racing it also has a huge focus on Mater being a secret agent (yes like James Bond style.)  The one character missing is Doc Hudson, which is sad but luckily my boys didn’t notice.

The movie starts off with Lightening McQueen coming home to Radiator Springs after winning another Piston Cup and a World Grand Prix is announced.  At first Lightening was not going to race but with some pushing from Mater he takes on the challenge.  So Lightening takes his Radiator Springs crew with him to see the world and after Mater has some embarrassing moments, he gets mistaken for a secret agent!  There are so many funny parts and I would say that it definitely appealed to adults too – nothing vulgar or anything like that but just jokes that maybe kids won’t get or appreciate.  My boys loved of course the race cars, fast racing, and weapons.  This Cars also does have weapons in it and does talk about “killing” so if that is something you don’t let your kids watch, then you might want to reconsider this movie.

Like I said “Cars 2” was a long movie, almost two hours, and there really was a lot going on.  I actually think I could watch this a few more times and still find something new that I missed!  I didn’t think I’d like the whole spy-thing, but it actually worked and made for an interesting plot line, not to mention giving Mater a big part!  I definitely like this movie better than the first Cars, although it could be because I have seen the first Cars a million times and it was refreshing to see a new plot line!  The movie also had great scenery as they visited the other countries and while I don’t know how realistic it was, it sure looked real.  I can’t even pinpoint a favorite part of the movie as there really are so many great scenes!  Overall, my husband and I really liked this movie and while my boys got antsy towards the end I think once this comes out on DVD they will embrace it just like they did the original Cars.
