ABOUT:

Learning to read is more fun than ever with this new version of Letter Sounds, Rock ‘N Learn’s best-selling DVD video. Engaging characters and more material help kids learn the skills to become competent readers. After a quick review of upper and lowercase letters, young learners practice the most common sound each letter makes. An on-screen mouth shows how to form the sounds.

Excitement builds as kids race the clock to say letter sounds in silly sentences before hearing the answers. Then, learners play several games to solidify their understanding of letter-sound associations that will help them read and spell. Finally, after learning some common sight words, kids feel successful reading complete sentences and short stories.

Episodes:

  • The New Alphabet Song
  • Learn the Sounds
  • Letter Sounds Quiz
  • Name That Letter!
  • Reading Words
  • Consonant Combinations
  • Spell It!
  • Swap the Sounds
  • Common Sight Words
  • Reading Sentences

MY THOUGHTS:

“Letter Sounds” is a perfect DVD for kids ages 4-7 that covers letters and words.  As a mom of a 3 and 5 year old who love TV, I think this DVD is great for teaching phonics to young kids while entertaining them at the same time.  My boys don’t necessarily always watch TV but they do like it on in the background while they are playing, especially in the basement.

So the other day I slipped this DVD on and while they played they listened, and amazingly they started repeated what they were hearing.  The DVD plays the alphabet song (a few times), plays words, sentences and asks questions.  There really is so much packed into this hour-long DVD.  There is even an on-screen mouth that shows kids how to move their mouths to make the letter sounds.  The DVD may not feature amazing graphics, but it still is colorful, fun and engaging for kids.  I really like this DVD for my boys and I have no problem letting them watch it over and over!
