DVD Review: “G.I. Joe Renegades: Season One, Vol. 1”

G.I. Joe Renegades: Season One, Vol. 1

Released: June 5, 2012

Studio: Shout! Factory

Running Time: 300 minutes

ABOUT:

Soldiers … heroes … outlaws. On the run after being accused of crimes they didn’t commit, six young G.I.s battle to clear their names — and expose the real bad guys, COBRA Industries. The world thinks this giant corporation is good, but it’s really run by evil people who want to rule the planet. It’s up to these renegade Joes to stop COBRA, save the world and themselves.

MY THOUGHTS:

I have younger brothers and remember G.I. Joe from back in the day.  This DVD brought back memories and it was so cute to watch my boys enjoy this series.  The characters are traditional G.I. Joe characters and they are trying to expose the COBRA bad guys.  My boys are only 3 and 5 years old and didn’t really understand the dialogue but a 7 year old or so would probably love this DVD.  This set includes two discs and a total of 13 episodes.  My boys wanted to watch one after another and I admit I followed the storyline.

BUY IT: You can buy “G.I. Joe Renegades: Season One, Vol. 1” wherever DVDs are sold or check it out online for $19.93.

  • I was blessed with 2 girls; the 1st very tomboyish & open to "boy things" whereas the youngest is a ruffley, puffley, ribbons, beads, baubles, pink & pastels sort. My "odometer" rolled over to 41 last month, so I recall the days of using my older bro's GI Joes as more "manly" dates for my Barbies & when my nephews came into the world circa 1990, the original GI Joe cartoons came about & became a sort of background noise if I was watching them & the weather wasn't agreeable to escape to the outdoors. From what I recall, even back then, COBRA was a shady organization. I'm unsure if the newer version is as poorly animated & "yelly-screamy-shouty" as it was or worse to match the "boy" cartoons of late (seriously, I guess Japan's anime cartoons are better in Japanese because the English versions fill in so much of their dialog with shouts & yells & UGH, are just plain awful to endure! The last cartoon that we thought was geared more for boys, but wasn't, was Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Air Bender" & actually became a BIG hit with both of my girls as they identified & understood the trials & escapades Aang, Katara, Toph & Sokka (later they even came to love Prince Zuko) brought alive. It was an extra treat that the artwork was gorgeous, the animation smooth & the dialog wasn't just a whole bunch of noise. Sadly the newer one, Avatar: Legend of Korra is a bit of a stretch even for Lala (the eldest daughter) to follow at 8 years old. As Lala's bestest buddy is a boy, she will watch "boy" cartoons at his house & much to Moosh's (the lil' one) chagrin, occasionally watches them here at home. I'm not sure if she's seen any GI Joe cartoons, but the clip you shared isn't as awful as, say, the "yelly-screamy-shouty" & terribly animated Dragon Ball series, which the latest of the series shows them as being toddlers is all around face palmy for me & simply unbearable for Moosh. I see that there are a couple of female soldiers in this GI Joe series & perhaps would be a little more acceptable to my most "girly" child. If nothing else, this did give me a great idea for Lala's buddy's birthday gift. Thanks for that. :)
