In a recent CDC weekly report attention was raised over the serious injuries and medical complications caused by coin lithium battery digestion, which is on the rise. Energizer has created an innovative new packaging, coming soon to store shelves nationwide. It is made from more durable and flexible materials making it more difficult for young children to open. Energizer is actually the first to introduce the significant packaging improvement to make an effort to reduce the occurrence of ingestions of the coin-sized button batteries by children and the associated medical complications. The new packaging meets Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines for child-resistant packaging. In addition to the package design itself, Energizer added easily understood icons on the front of packages to let parents know to keep the batteries away from small children, along with detailed warning copy advising of the danger of ingesting coin cell batteries and how to get help if they are swallowed. Finally, last year Energizer teams up with Safe Kids to establish The Battery Controlled to help raise awareness of the issue at www.thebatterycontrolled.com.
There are so many toys with small batteries that I never even thought about a child putting on of those in their mouths. I also need to be better about storing our batteries so this was a nice reminder to me to think about that. Now I think of my batteries (especially my small coin-sized batteries) like I do our medicine and I keep them locked up.
