Book & Plush Review: “Lil’ Riding Hood and I Love Cake”

Its seems like all the classic fairy tales from when I was little have a scary aspect to them. From the big bad wolf to a giant, they are parts of stories that some of the parent’s from today don’t want to share with their children. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t shelter my children from everything as I think sheltering them completely wouldn’t prepare them for real life, but there is also a time to be a child. A company called My1story, winner of Dr. Toy’s 100 Best Children’s Products, has changed two popular children’s fairytales to put a positive spin on them. That’s right Little Red Riding Hood has become Lil’ Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk has become Beanie.

Each storybook and plush introduces classic characters but in a brand new way. The loveable, never scary, illustrations are by Jaime Rodriguez, a former Walt Disney Company character artist. Formerly sinister big bad wolf has been rewritten as a mischievous but approachable wolf cub. The giant in Jack & the Beanstalk transforms into Beanie, still a giant but a young, small one. I Love Cake and Jack and the Magic Beans are the first two books of the My1story series. The hardcover books are 10” x 10”, a nice storybook size.

I received the book “Lil’ Riding Hood and I Love Cake” and the Lil’ Riding Hood plush to check out and they are absolutely adorable. The book is a hardcover and beautifully illustrated to entice any child. In the story, Lil’ Riding Hood, Riding Hood is taking a delicious cake to Grandma’s house but Wolfie of course wants a taste. He heads off to grannie’s, but instead of eating grandma the wolf waits and they all enjoy the cake! The story is all about sharing and friendship.

I read this story to my 4 year old son and 1 year old daughter and both enjoyed it. My daughter especially loved the illustrations and couldn’t stop cuddling with the Riding Hood Plush. I love that I don’t have to explain what happened to grandma, which really why does the wolf have to eat her in the classic fairytale? I hope that my kids go to bed dreaming of cake and friends. The plush is a great addition to the story because so often my kids like a book or show but I can’t find anything to go along with it. If you are looking for a happy ending (finally), then My 1story is definitely a series to check out!
