DVD Review: “Slugterra: Return Of The Shane Gang”

“Slugterra: Return Of The Shane Gang”

Released:  February 12, 2013

Studio:  Shout! Factory

Running Time:  110 minutes

Eli Shane is determined to be the greatest Slugslinging hero of them all! Only by collecting, training and dueling with little critters called SLUGS can Eli and his team hope to defeat the forces of evil. Did we mention the part where the slugs transform into powerful magical beasts? That part’s AWESOME!

Slugterra is an epic sci-fi comedy/adventure set deep underground, where the ammo’s live (literally!) and only the quick survive! In this luminous, high-tech, underground world, every cavern holds a new adventure, a new battle and weird little slugs to be discovered!

First I will say I got this DVD for my boys because I figured slugs would be right up their alley.  We ended up watching this whole 110 minute DVD in one sitting one morning when my son was sick and we are all hooked on the show!  It is a show unlike any other we have seen where it has a little of everything.  It has just the right colorful and bright animation (not japanimation or comic-book like), it features different chracters of both sexes who work as a team, it is not really fighting as much as it is slinging slugs at each other!  So normally I don’t let my kids watch fighting cartoons but this one is action packed but still silly at the same time since they are shooting slugs!  Each slug has a unique fighting ability and they are treated most the time like little pets, I say most of the time because of course there is a bad guy who is making good slug turn into bad ones.

Overall, this is a great DVD for any child, either boy or girl.  It is a show from Disney XD which luckily we have because I have started recording the new episodes!  I might actually want to watch it more than my boys!

Episodes:

  • The World Beneath Our Feet, Part 1
  • The World Beneath Our Feet, Part 2
  • The Trade
  • The Slug Out
  • Deadweed

While this DVD only features five episodes it is the beginning five so you can watch the show from the beginning.  Eli is the main character at only 15 years old and shows great courage, decision making skills, responsibility and patience.  The characters do fight bad guys by shooting slugs and the slugs turn into bigger slugs after they are shot.  I will say I thought this would be a cheesy show or weirdly animated but its not and I don’t mind my kids (4 and 6) watching it.
