DVD Review: “The Legend of Korra – Book One: Air”

Disclosure: I was sent this DVD to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Legend of Korra – Book One: Air

Released: July 9, 2013

Studio:  Paramount (Nickelodeon)

Running Time:  289 minutes

From the creators of the Award-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender, comes a new TV series that continues the exciting adventures of element bending. When Avatar Aang passes, he is reincarnated as a girl named Korra, from the Southern Water Tribe. Against the wishes of her guardians, Korra leaves the safety of her home to travel to Republic City. Before long, Korra’s Avatar skills are put to the test when she encounters a group of Chi-blockers led by a masked man named Amon. With his Equalists followers, Amon plots to gain control over Republic City and ultimately rid the world of the “impurity” of bending. Korra and her friends will stop at nothing to capture him, leading to an Avatar adventure like nothing before in Legend of Korra: Book One: Air!

My boys are young still and while I don’t think they have ever seen “The Legend of Korra” series on Nickelodeon, that doesn’t mean they didn’t enjoy the DVD.  Now they of course didn’t really understand or appreciate the DVD, since they are only 5 and 6, but they nonetheless watched it.  I think for a 8 year old and up though they really like this DVD and show.  It is an avatar based animated show with a female avatar as the main character who is learning airbending (like “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”)  She has friends, enemies and there is lots of action going on in all the episodes on this DVD.  Yes there is fighting but I didn’t feel like it was anything too inappropriate and this is a Nickelodeon show, but yes screen it before if your worried about it or having a young child watch it.  I was drawn to the DVD though as I like how the main character is a girl, since that is hard to find nowadays!  I used it as an example for my boys how girls can do whatever boys can do!  Now I will say I didn’t feel lost having never seen this show or anything like it, but I am sure having knowledge about the show would help.  It is nice though to get all these episodes on one DVD for a low price!
