Okay so when I saw that I would be going on an airboat and checking out wildlife, I was not that excited but boy am I glad I got the chance to experience Wild Florida. First what you should know is that an airboat is not a speed boat so while it does go a decent speed (enough that you may catch some flies) it is not dangerously whipping you around (or at least ours wasn’t.) It is basically a big pontoon boat with a fan on the back so glide you around the water since some of the water is shallow that a regular boat motor wouldn’t work. If you’re interested, you can find pontoon rentals in Fort Walton Beach to experience this unique watercraft.
Our captain for the ride was amazing! He was a cheerful guy who you could tell loves being outdoors and telling hunting stories. Our ride consisted of about an hour airboat ride where our captain would stop occasionally and point our alligators. It was crazy to see how many were out there. We also saw a bald eagle’s nest! No houses or development, just land. I remember my husband wanting to do an airboat ride a few years ago and I was totally against it, but now I can’t wait to do it again!
After our airboat ride, we toured Wild Florida and saw so many amazing animals. They have pretty much a little of everything on their 14 acre nature park! First off there are tons of alligators, which I actually got to hold one!
Other than alligators there are birds, zebras, deer, water buffalo, watusi, lemurs and more. I had no clue there were so many animals to be seen there. Our tour guide was telling us how they are constantly expanding and building new animal areas.
Overall, even though it is a 45 minute ride from the Orlando area it is well worth it. The land and animals are beautiful and the airboat ride is an awesome experience. It was another thing that I was able to mark off my bucket list!
