Huawei Ascend Mate 2 Smartphone – Unlocked and Affordable! {Review}

Disclosure:  I received the product below to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

A good smartphone can be hard to find.  Sure there are tons to choose from, but some are limited in what you can customize, others are small or clunky and then there are some whose battery dies so quickly you wonder why you even have a smartphone!  The Huawei Ascend Mate 2 is none of those, it is a smartphone that has seriously impressed me.

First off you probably have never heard of Huawei as a brand, but that doesn’t mean they are unknown. Huawei is a new brand in America but they have proved themselves these last three years as a global player.  Their challenge was to improve smartphone technology through awesome features, offer affordable prices, no contracts and dedicated customer service.  They succedded and Huawei now gives consumers the freedome to choose a new way to expierence a smartphone with the Huawei Ascend Mate 2.

The Huawei Ascend Mate 2 may seem like an ordinary smartphone from the surface but once you start swipping around on it, you see and feel the difference.  I will say the only thing right now that is holding me back from using the phone as my permenant cell phone is I am waiting until I can get a case I want for it.  Since the phone is so new here the cases are limited in styles and I want a particular wallet-style case for it like I have for my other smartphone.

Features I love:

  • Amazing battery life (48-60 hours standard use)
  • Unlocked phone – meaning you can use this with ANY cellular network you choose without a 2 year contract (no hidden fees)
  • 5 MP front camera for selfies and 13 MP back camera for everything else – uses a Sony lens
  • 4G LTE so its super fast on your network
  • 6.1 inch high-def screen – means more pixels, less plastic
  • It is designed to be used one-handed (the keyboard moves over to the left or right side) or with gloves on using Glove Mode
  • Windows on Windows – means you can do two things with one screen over another
  • Lots of widgets and ways to customize the screens – drag and drop things wherever you want them!
  • Gorilla Glass screen for durability
  • Reverse charging capability (you do need to buy a separate cable) – this means you can charge another device from your phone such as a camera or tablet!  I didn’t try this because I don’t have the required cable but it is an awesome feature to have!
  • Bluetooth and hotspot capabilities
  • Android system – Google Play store and Amazon App store

I admit the phone is big but that is probably my favorite feature.  Nowadays I use my phone pretty much for social media, texting and talking via my bluetooth, I don’t need it to be small.  Six inches is the perfect size I think – not too big and not too small.  I admit at first the phone may be overwhelming because of its size but once you get used to it, going back to a smaller phone is not easy.

There really is nothing I’d change about this phone, other than adding more cases for it!  Everything that I have asked for in a phone this phone has.  Better battery life, big HD screen, fully customizable, Android store apps, and able to use with any service without a contract!  Most unlocked phones cost $500+ and with this one costing just $300 it makes it a very reasonable unlocked phone.  Great if you don’t want to sign a contract or maybe you don’t want to be stuck with a certain carrier.  It is a plastic case but its pretty durable, avaialble in white or black.  The phone is lightweight as well so it is easy to manage.  I have small hands and its fine for me. Honestly this phone has really impressed me and I’m glad I gave it a shot.  Like I said, don’t let its size turn you off, it may surprise you how fast you can get used to a big phone!

Oh and the battery life being able to last for days?  Awesome!  When I am out with my family taking pictures, sharing them, checking emails and such, my phone does not even last the whole day.  I have to carry around a portable charger with me to boost my phone’s battery usually and with this phone I don’t have to!

I made a quick video to show you what the phone looks like using it:

Right now (for a limited time) if you buy from Huawei they are even offering a promotion of unlimited talk, text and date from Net10 free for 30 days with the phone.  So you can try out the phone without talking the SIM card from your current phone or without signing up for a cellular service.  You don’t have to use the Net10 card if you don’t want to, just pop in your current SIM card and your good to go.  I used this with my current AT&T SIM card and it works perfectly fine!

Shopping this weekend for Black Friday?  Don’t miss this great deal!

When you buy a Mate2 via GetHuawei.com, Amazon, Fry’s, or New Egg, you get a free Huawei Color Cube Mini Boom Box (retail value $99) and a pre-paid Net10 SIM Card (30 days of unlimited talk, text, and data), all included in the $299.99 price tag.
