On April 25th, the beloved citizens of Coal Valley are faced with turmoil as they await justice for the coal mining tragedy, just as new romance heats up on the frontier. Clueless as to what I’m talking about? Well the Hallmark Channel has a television show called “When Calls the Heart.” Season 1 wrapped up last year but its coming back on for a second season on April 25th. The original series from Hallmark Channel is a beloved frontier drama that stars some big stars including Lori Loughlin (“Full House,” “90210”), Erin Krakow (“Army Wives”), Daniel Lissing (“Last Resort”) and Jack Wagner (“The Bold and the Beautiful”). The show is inspired by the best-selling series by Janette Oke.
I honestly had no clue this show existed as I don’t watch much live television but luckily I was able to catch up on Season 1 with the 10 DVD Collectors Edition set. I love when I can have a marathon with a show to catch up, especially before the next season comes out. While I haven’t made it through the whole first season yet, it is a show that I find myself looking forward to the next episode of. Being a Hallmark Channel showI like that I don’t have to worry about my kids walking in and seeing anything inappropriate as the show is wholesome.
When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads.
Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a 19th century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.
The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West, and reunites Oke with Executive Producer and Director, Michael Landon, Jr.
Like I said I had never watched the show before nor had I read the book series but this show is a primetime show. The characters have struggles, fall in love, and go about their everyday business all in a small town from the 19th century. I like that it is not a typical drama set in today’s world, it features a simpler society in the rural west. The story line features a high society woman who has to live in conditions she is not used to, women who become widows but work a man’s job to survive, a spiteful sheriff and so much more. I like that I can put the show on while I working on my laptop and just unwind, it is not a show you need to really worry about missing anything significant. The show does have a plot though in each episode and it kept me engaged, I will definitely be tuning into season 2!
