Clever Ways to Reduce the Cost of Your Move

You’ve just gotten a promotion and your first reaction is “finally, I’m on my way” — that is until you realize that the new position is halfway across the country. While you’re very excited, you now have the challenge of relocating, quickly. If you’ve lived at the same address for many years, chances are pretty good that you’ve acquired quite a bit of stuff. When it comes to moving every item carries with it a price tag, so now you have the dilemma of deciding what to bring and what to do with the rest of your things. A company like Kansas City Movers can help do the job.

It happens every day, for many different reasons, people must relocate to another state or town. With that comes the expense and stress of a fast move. If you are like many people raising a family, you probably don’t have a savings account that you can part with to cover such a move. After all, depending on where you relocate to, it can end up costing $5,000, $10,000, and even move. Using a moving company like Allied will give you peace of mind in knowing that your valuables will arrive safely.

How to Reduce the Cost of Your Move

Even though you may hire a moving company like YOU MOVE ME, there are still ways to reduce your expenses during a move and get the lowest price possible without sacrificing on quality. Most moving companies give you the option of packing up your belongings yourself or having them do it. Choosing to do it yourself can save hundreds. In addition to doing your own packing, another way to save more is to provide your own boxes. The company will offer to send you their boxes, but you can opt to use your own. They will have restrictions on sizes and quantities of each but so long as you follow the list to the tee you’ll reduce your expense even further.

Even though you are excited about the new job, now you must put all your efforts into packing up your home. Getting started takes time, and unfortunately, you don’t have that luxury. So a room by room assessment of what you want to take and what you feel you can part with is the first order of business. Put your things into categories: must haves, maybes and leave behind. Once you have the must haves packaged up then you can figure out how much space you have left for other add-ons. With the rest of the items, you can take out an ad in the local paper and have a yard sale, use places like Craig’s list and other similar sites or give things away to nearby family members and friends. This will benefit you in two ways. One, you’ll lighten your load and two you’ll earn money towards the move.

The Home Stretch, the Cleanup

Depending on whether you are selling a home or renting an apartment or home, the only thing left to finish it the cleanup. Instead of hiring an outside company to comb through your place top to bottom, have a get together where all your family members and friends help with the cleanup. After you finish the job, you can treat them to a barbecue or sandwiches and beverages. It’s a great way to your family, neighbors, and friends to send you off and feel a part of the process. Plus your home or apartment will be squeaky clean. With the cleaning done, you may have many bags of garbage and miscellaneous items that nobody wants or that aren’t really worth anything. If you contact your regular garbage company, most times they will give you a fair price to remove all of these things in one pickup.

Now that you’ve finished on this end your workload just begins at the other end. But, at least you reduced your cargo and made a few dollars that offset the cost of the move. Plus, now it gives you some room to purchase a few new items at your new destination, now known as home.
