To kick off the year, American Girl has launched their newest doll, Gabriela McBride. As 2017 Girl of the Year, Gabriela is a doll who has a passion for the arts – specifically spoken word poetry. She is a girl who is all about overcoming personal obstacles and creating positive changes for her community.

Gabriela is a beautiful 18-inch doll dressed in a performance-inspired outfit. Unlike past Girl of the Year dolls, as the 15th Girl of the Year, Gabriela will be available throughout 2017 and beyond.

Gabriela’s Story

Her story says that her mother is the founder of the Liberty Community Arts Center, which is where Gabriela and her friends hang out. So Gabriela has grown up surrounded by the arts – dance, painting, music and theater. In Gabriela’s stories, it is discovered that she struggles with stuttering but thanks to a new group in the arts center Gabriela finds her words flow freely in her poetry.

Partnership with Scholastic

To make sure Gabriela’s inspiring message is shared and to bring awareness to spoken word poetry, American Girl is partnering with Scholastic to create and distribute Express Yourself. The program Express Yourself was designed to empower students to use the arts as a tool for self-expression. Teachers can access these tools in March 2017 to encourage students to find their creative voices, just in time for National Poetry Month in April.

We love Gabriela McBride

My daughter fell in love with Gabriela as soon as she arrived at our doorstep. From her fun clothes to flowing curls, my daughter was so excited to play with her. Her hair is my favorite as it is unlike other dolls we have. While my daughter is young and doesn’t understand Gabriela’s story yet, I can’t wait to share it with her as she grows. I feel the story is very inspiring and she is such a great role model for young girls. With what is going on in today’s world with women, I love the girl empowerment that Gabriela is all about.
