Do you ever just want to play a simple game that everyone can enjoy? What if they could learn something in the process, and not even realize they are learning? Bonus, right?! Well, Top Trumps is just that! Kids can read about fun topics, learn new words and facts and even work on their numbers skills. The best part though is the Top Trumps games are extremely portable, meaning you can take them anywhere and everywhere for fun.
First, you narrow down on which of the 60+ decks you are going to play with. I will say too, we have even combined our various decks for more cards and items to compare.
Next, you shuffle and deal out all the cards face down. Each player then holds their cards so only the top one is showing.
The first player then picks a category of their choosing and reads the value for it. For example, John Deere 830. Then the other players read their number and whoever has the highest value wins the cards. You keep going until one person has all the cards.
I have a deck of Top Trumps in my purse and car at all times. My kids love that they can play it anywhere or even just read the facts on the cards. My oldest, for example, loves tractors and reads the Who’s the Muddiest? Tractors cards over and over. My 6-year-old daughter, on the other hand, loves just looking at all the different Shopkins cards when she is alone.
The cards really are fun and educational. I look at it even if my kids are learning about tractors or cars or even volcanoes, they are still practicing reading and number skills. As a parent of kids who are not the biggest into reading, I love anything that inspires my kids. I also love when they spew out random facts like “Did you know that there is a volcano called Tambora in Indonesia that had the most destructive eruption in the past 200 years?” It is random facts like those they are soaking in that I love. If anything my kids too will have great conversation pieces from these games!
One thing we are slowly working through living near Chicago is making sure we check out all the big sights to see. The Top Trumps Top 30 Things to See Chicago deck has been perfect for my kids to learn about the places we are going to before we go as well as making sure we cover all the popular attractions. As a Chicago native my whole life, I admit there are spots I have not even been too.
Really though no matter what you or your child is into, there is a Top Trumps deck available. I picked out six decks but already see a bunch more that I am adding to our list. These decks make great gifts too (and stocking stuffers) since they are small and affordable with prices ranging from $5 to $10.
