So first off, don’t hate me for not saying “I loved Black Panther.” I feel like it is a good movie but it is just missing something. I figured the best way to review this movie was to list what I liked and didn’t like about the Black Panther movie. I should also add that I am not a huge Marvel fan, I am just a regular moviegoer who likes a good movie!
The movie is unlike other superhero movies. It is current but futuristic and set in Africa! I feel like most superhero movies are set in a big city like New York or LA, this was in a big city (Wakanda) but it is set in Africa and not what you’d expect. I really liked how they created Wakanda and “hid” it.
While the main character is a young African prince (T’Challa), it has very strong female characters surrounding him. My favorite part is when his sister helps him when he freezes up. I feel like this movie really showed how smart and strong women can be!
The tech used. I thought all the tech used was so futuristic and cool, amazing how it was all thought up! I would have liked though to see more on the tech and how it was created.
While it is rated PG-13, the fight scenes like I mentioned are gruesome. There are no nudity scenes, which is a refresher, but there are a few bad words – nevertheless, I did let my kids ages 6, 9, and 11 years old watch this movie. I didn’t feel like it was totally inappropriate for my kids, which is good because they really wanted to see this new superhero movie.
The fighting. There are a few really gruesome (bloody) fight scenes with T’Challa and another male that are just too painful to watch. The scenes reminded me of boxing or MMA fighting. I actually turned my head during these scenes. Nobody dies from the fighting but it just looks so painful.
The movie was missing something, which I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe I just wanted more, especially more of an explanation on things (like his father, his ex-girlfriend, how his cousin knew everything, how the other tribe lives…)
The CIA agent that helps T’Challa seems out of place. He is thrown in the movie as knowing T’Challa but not much about how and then he doesn’t seem surprised enough over his healing and Wakanda and helping them fight. I did read he was in a past Avengers movie but as someone who is not a diehard Marvel fan, I didn’t know that.
If my kids wanted to watch again, I would otherwise I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it. I didn’t get a chance to watch all the extras and those might help as I know there is only so much that can go in the movie. I really would like to know more about Wakanda and maybe watching again, I could pay more attention to those scenes.
