I admit when I played my first cooperative game with my oldest child, I didn’t get it. I mean shouldn’t there be a winner and a loser? While I still think kids need to learn to loose and that is okay to do so, I also think kids need to learn about teamwork. The world is not always out to get you and something you have to face on your own!
A new cooperative board game called The Baby Beluga Game is a great game for children of all ages and their families. What makes it great for all ages is that there are three levels of play depending on age and ability. For example, for kids that cannot read you leave out the cards with words.
The goal of the game is to help Baby Beluga and his friends complete their journey to swim wild and free. Players work together to free the friends as they move across the game board.
While my boys didn’t want to play (they are 10 and 11 years old) my 7-year-old daughter was so excited to play the whale game as she called it. We started out the easy way for beginners so she could get a feel for playing and I plan to slowly move up to the next level and so forth. She is not a very good loser and gives up easily so I figure we would work our way up through this game – I love that there are rules for playing three different levels as I have never seen a game that grows with the players.
The game is also beautifully illustrated and the box can even be used as a playset – it even snaps together.
While kids are not playing, the instruction book goes past just describing the rules and has a whole section called Science Pages, where the pages talk about the various animals.
I think The Baby Beluga Game would make a great addition to any child’s (or teacher’s) game collection. It is for kids ages 3 to 10 years old and up to 8 players at one time!
