Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

June 9, 2023

In this long-awaited movie adaption of Judy Blume’s classic, groundbreaking novel, eleven-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates). A timeless coming-of-age story, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret sparkles with insightful humor while candidly exploring life’s biggest questions.

Written for the Screen and Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig. Based on the Book by Judy Blume. Produced by James L. Brooks, p.g.a., Julie Ansell, p.g.a., Richard Sakai, Kelly Fremon Craig, p.g.a., Judy Blume, Amy Lorraine Brooks, Aldric La’auli Porter. Executive Producer Jonathan McCoy.

I saw this in theaters with my 11-year-old daughter and we loved the movie. I remember reading the book and was excited to see the movie with great actors in it. The movie is perfect for a 6th or 7th grader especially who is just starting to go through what Margaret is. The movie opened up topics for us to talk about and made it less awkward and more fun! The story deals with topics important to woman and girls. I usually don’t like movies made after a book but I feel like this movie was perfect, although I admit it has been a lot of years since I read the book! I can’t wait to watch all the extras on the DVD.
