You Can Do a Graphic Novel
By Barbara Slate
208 Pages (Paperback)
Date Published: January 5, 2010
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Graphic novels, a variation of comic books, are slowly but surely gaining popularity with tweens and teens. Thousands who just went to see Thor are eagerly waiting for the opening night of Captain America, Green Lantern and The Avengers. The movies that are expected to generate millions in the box office will also refresh curiosity in graphic novels.
Creating a graphic novel combines writing and illustrating with great creativity. It can be educational, exciting and fun. For young graphic novel enthusiasts the process of creating a graphic novel can be a great adventure that exercises their inner artists and makes a great project for long summer days.
Barbara Slate, graphic novelist and author of You Can Do a Graphic Novel guides readers through the same process she learned in her early days working for Marvel and DC Comics-a process she has simplified for the classes she teaches and for the syndicated column she writes. The book teaches readers how to:
· Be creative in a way that works for you.
· Find your own artistic style!
· Create characters that get people’s attention … and hold it!
· Develop a great plotline and write believable dialogue.
· Lay out pages to keep the story moving forward.
· Keep those creative juices flowing when you get stuck.
MY THOUGHTS:
Now even though I am not interested in comics or graphic novels, this book really is neat. It would be a perfect book for anyone (child or adult) who is interested in starting their own graphic novel, whether they are clueless where to start or just looking for some additional pointers. The book contains tons of pictures, big font, questions to think about, and just walks you through everything from start to finish! I love how it is easy to read and follow, rather than being a small font book with limited pictures. This book really wants you to succeed and make the best graphic novel you can! It is especially perfect and relevant now that all the super hero movies have been making a comeback and more and more people are getting interested in them! I am still very surprised at how well written this book is and how it covers so much for being a small 187 page paperback.

My son loves the Power Rangers.
Oh and excuse me, I forgot my answer!! LOLZ My favorite super hero has changed over time... Early on I L♥ved Fat Albert!!(Do they count as super heroes? They always solved &/or learned something!?) Also, I was OBSESSED with all things TMNT for a while! Batman was a regular favorite; I read the comic books, watched the vintage show & never missed the cartoon! And, my little brother & I watched Captain Planet together.
In my later years, I still like Batman a lot, Big Daddy (et. al.) from "Kick-Ass," John Marsden from "Red Dead Redemption," & the "Standards:" X-Men, Super-Man & Spider-Man.
*I suppose I like too many to list just one Favorite, but for this purpose, I'll answer Batman, because I've loved him & his story throughout my life; from childhood until today!
