DVD Review: “Nursery Rhyme Singing Time with Mother Goose Club”

ABOUT:

Nursery Rhyme Singing Time with Mother Goose Club DVD has been nominated for 14 Midsouth EMMY awards and featured on PBS stations since 2009.  The program is developed to help develop reading readiness, enrich minds and enhance speech skills.  Packed with music, color and live-action episodes starring the Mother Goose Club characters, kids will sing, clap and dance their way to learning words and sounds.  The DVD was also created by a mom, and designed by educators.

Mother Goose Club is a series of 1-minute educational programs for preschoolers promoting early literacy. The live-action series features six colorful characters from the Mother Goose world: Teddy Bear, Jack B. Nimble, Little Bo Peep, Baa Baa Sheep, Mary Quite Contrary, and Eep Mouse, who invite viewers to sing and dance along to favorite nursery rhymes.

There is also the Mother Goose Club website which contains a collection of rhymes, including many Mother Goose rhymes, with illustrations, audio narrations, songs and printable coloring pages. Some live action and animated videos are also available. For parents and teachers, the site offers activities and tips on using rhymes to promote literacy at home and at school.

MY THOUGHTS:

I admit I am terrible with nursery rhymes but I do know they are important for young kids.  I had no clue though that early childhood research has shown that familiarity with nursery rhymes helps young children learn to read!  It definitely makes sense though because kids not only sing the songs repeatedly usually but they also interact by dancing and clapping along.

I put in the Nursery Rhyme Singing Time with Mother Goose Club DVD for my 3 and 4 year old boys and they were immediately clapping and laughing.  My 4 year old knew most of the songs from preschool and was trying to sing along and do all the movements which was super cute!  The DVD contains kids dressed as nursery rhyme characters and singing and acting out the rhymes.  The costumes are fun and bright and the songs go one after another!  I actually finally learned the right words for nursery rhymes and my boys are learning with me!  The rhyming is great and the DVD is more than 30 minutes of fun!  There are also numbers and words on the screen for kids to see and learn that go along with the songs!  I am definitely going to be playing this DVD for our new baby when she is old enough for television so she gets a good start with her nursery rhymes!
