Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
I am embarrassed to admit but I have never been to a musical before, nor have I really ever been to big production for that matter. My husband and I needed a date night and I am all about anything from the 80s, so Rock of Ages on Broadway (in Chicago) was the perfect combination. What did I think of the show? Honestly I absolutely loved it and if I could I would go see it again.
Now going to the show I had no idea what to expect, but honestly I thought it would be cheesy singing and my husband would be bored – I was wrong. The show had song after song that I couldn’t help but sing along to and it was very much an adult show. Was there nudity? Nope, but the outfits, or rather lack there of, were definitely not for kids eyes. The show was non-stop action (except of course an intermission) and I couldn’t take my eyes off of the characters. I cheered for the characters and I was on the edge of my seat with what would happen next. I mean you knew how it would end, but they threw in some loops that were great surprises. I will say every musical needs a good gay guy in a leotard.
The energy of the show was amazing and it went from one part of a song to another. I honestly can’t pick a favorite character as they all have parts I absolutely loved but I will say that Andrew Sklar as Lonny was a close first. He was the narrator and a character, leading the show the whole time. He did an awesome job. Could the actors/actresses sing? Absoltely. They sang their hearts out and I couldn’t believe they were singing so powerfully, dancing and performing their skits.
Overall, for my first musical experience I am now hooked and can’t wait for the next show. I warn you though it will shock you with some of the outfits and actions, but give it a chance and remember its all in good fun. The show is also set in the 1980s so remember that too. It is a show that you will not forget. Also, I want to add that I have not see the movie Rock of Ages so I don’t know how it compares to it, but the musical is fabulous.
SEE IT: Rock of Ages is here in Chicago for one week only this time and will finish it’s run on March 16th.
