eBeanstalk: "My Five Year Old Takes Forever…"

Here is another post from eBeanstalk.com:

My 5-Year-Old Takes Forever to Get Dressed!

by: Barbara Greenspan, OT Occupational Therapist

I often get this question (and I’ve lived through it with 2 of my own!). What I find works the best is really quite simple…make a map.

Kids do so well when they have a visual “Map” to follow.

Draw out the steps for them…this is great for the younger kids too. Draw a picture of each article of clothing, in the order they are to put on the clothes.

Also, I recommend numbering the steps.

You can even make it a checklist and they can make a check once each article of clothing is completely on their body.

You’ll see…before long your child will be getting dressed quicker, with less stress and frustration for everyone.

My 5 year old takes forever getting dressed too, but he is slow with everything. Always the last to finish dinner, last to be in line in class, last to finish his assignmnets. So I just figured, he just enjoys dilly dallying…
    oh well.

My two year old is pokey, but hopefully he will pick up the pace as he grows!
