Whether you have a daughter or not, “Dancing With Ana” by Nicole Barker, is a must read. Beth Baxter is a 16 year old whose father has abandoned her a year ago. Now at 15 years old, a girl is young, impressionable, and still struggling to find herself, so Beth is having an extra hard time dealing with her father leaving. Needing a distraction, Beth decides to focus on losing 10 pounds through a new diet.
Luckily Beth has three best friends who join her and they all decide to diet together. What I really liked was all the girls are different and they all act like teenagers. Sometimes in books, the characters seem to act older than they are, but the author really developed these characters well and they are easy to relate to, or at least remember what it was like! Well after trying, only Beth is left dieting and she becomes obsessed. Since dieting was something she could control and focus her attention on, Beth soon became an anorexic. Then Beth starts up a relationship with the cute boy next door, Jeremy. Before her eating disorder completely takes over her life, Beth’s friends and boyfriend, must do what they can to save her.
I read this paperback book fairly quickly and it kept my interest. It was a different genre and type of book than I am used to, but since I have 3 younger sisters and I was one a teenager, I appreciated the book. The author, Nicole Barker, did an excellent job portraying an eating disorder and being a teenager. I would say this book is suited for girls ages 12 and up, however, I let my 11 year old sister read it and she liked it. Now she didn’t completely understand it, but girls are maturing earlier and earlier so I am glad she was able to see what an eating disorder is and how bad it can get.
Oh and if your curious like I was, the title Dancing with Ana means how Beth is dancing around anorexia as a way of coping with her problems.
