I am not a big seafood eater, just the occasional lobster, tilapia, or fish sticks basically. Well when I was pregnant with both my boys, I stopped eating fish all together because I wasn’t really sure what was safe and what wasn’t. Well pregnant women should stay away from fish high in mercury such as shark, mackarel, swordfish, and tilefish, but a new study shows it is actually smart to eat seafood during pregnancy.
A new scientific study shows that not eating seafood during pregnancy could lead to depression. I honestly don’t know if the depression-like symptoms I had during my pregnancies were actually depression or just my hormones as luckily they were not that bad. This study however goes on to say how moms-to-be who ate no seafood were nearly 50% more likely to have symptoms of depression than those who ate seafood at least three times per week. The study examined more than 14,500 pregnant women that those who ate two to three fish meals per week had the lowest levels of risk for symptoms of depression. The connection is that fish are the only naturally rich source of special omega-3 fatty acid called DHA, which is needed for the very best possible brain and eye development in babies. Fish also is an excellent source of lean protein and is rich in vitamin D and calcium which both help for a healthy pregnancy.
