ABOUT:
In an effort to combat her own children’s immersion into digital media, TV, and video games, Marlene Byrne created the children’s book series Project Play. This series encourages readers to partake in creative outdoor play.
Each book in the series features Sam and the Edgebrook gang playing games and learning from each other. The text is casual and easy for young readers to enjoy. There are three Rhyming Books which introduce the characters and then there are Chapter Books including: Treasure Hunt, Follow the Leader, Just a Baseball Game, Kick the Can, and Ghost in the Graveyard.
MY THOUGHTS:
Now even though my boys are little, I can already see they are on the path to be coach potatoes. They love their DVDs, cartoons, iPod, Video games (VTech MobiGo) and most of the time I think they would rather be inside than outside. Now I know it is really hot out right now and they are young, so I am not pushing them too much, but I definitely am going to be one of those moms that pushes her kids to play outside, especially during the summer when they will be home and driving me crazy probably! I think it is an awesome idea to not only create a book but incorporate into it games that kids can actually play!
Ghost in the Graveyard
Ghost in the Graveyard is Marlene Byrne s fifth installment in the lively Project Play series of children s books. Set on Halloween, each action-packed chapter promises a spook-tacular adventure for Sam and his Edgebrook friends. After returning from a night of trick-or-treating, the gang joins the older kids for a Halloween-themed party, where they learn how to play Ghost in the Graveyard one of the classic backyard games. As the friends search for the ghost in the pretend graveyard, they discover secret hiding places and learn new strategies for being IT. The book comes with the rules and the inspiration that young readers will use to get out and play the game with their own friends. The book is part of the overall Project Play movement to inspire families and neighborhoods to play games that demand imagination and foster creativity so that children channel those skills into their adult lives.
After reading this book, I want to go out and play Ghost in the Graveyard! It is such a cute book with tons of great colorful pictures. Since it is a chapter book it is geared towards kids around 9 years old, but I can see reading this to my boys in a few years. The chapters are short and the font is big so it really is a quick read, even though it is 55 pages. I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for inspiration for your kids to get out and play and read a book! I am sure the other books in the series are just as fun and creative as this one!
