Back when my husband and I were engaged, we fought a lot about my dad. Now my parents got divorced when I was a toddler and never got along afterwards. I saw my dad whenever it was convenient and he did seem to try to make things work as I got older. For whatever reason though when I got engaged, my dad changed. Don’t get me wrong, he was always a jerk, but I would defend him because he was my dad.
Well I realized why he changed when I got engaged; he knew it was coming down to who would walk me down the aisle. The problem was I have a really great stepdad and have every since I was in preschool. How I could choose between my real dad and stepdad? So when my real dad asked I said I couldn’t decide and that I decided I would have my younger brother (who is actually my half-brother) walk me down the aisle at my wedding. My real dad blew up and said he wouldn’t even come to my wedding nor would he let my younger sisters be in it. Well needless to say I haven’t talked to my dad since then. I defended him for awhile and then I started realizing how I wrong I was and realized it wasn’t worth my efforts in the end.
Now I can compare my situation to what Jimmy and Kathryn go through each week on the show “The Whole Truth.” One prosecutes and the other defends individuals without knowing with certainty if they are innocent or guilty. They argue in the courtroom for or against the defendant regardless of the truth. I can’t even imagine not knowing the whole truth and having to defend someone but the show goes from the beginning to end of a trial. You even get to see the jury verdict where you don’t always get to see on law shows.
