While I don’t watch too many tv shows (I watch enough cartoons that when the kids are in bed, I usually just want peace and quiet) I have noticed that there are not too many shows with lead female characters. Specifically I am referring to crime or law dramas. I actually probably wouldn’t have noticed it until I got hooked on TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles and realized I hadn’t heard of another show with women in powerful positions as the lead characters.
If you haven’t seen Rizzoli & Isles before it is drama that wrapped up its first season last year and is just about to start its second season on TNT. It actually won the Best Drama at the “Women’s Image Network Awards” in 2010 too! Rizzoli is a Boston detective and Isles is a medical examiner and while they are complete opposites they compliment each other as they solve cases.
While the show may be a little violent (there are killers and guns) for younger girls, I think the women in general make excellent role models. They have both succeeded in male dominated professions and they are strong, confident, women. Both women are single and do work a lot, but they are great at their jobs. I think it is great to watch their relationship in each case because they do have different personalities but each demonstrates their own strengths and weaknesses.
