Disclosure: I received the product below to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
My boys love to build and have ever since they could. Now that they are in school I definitely see their strengths being in STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. My daughter though is all about princesses and while she is young still it makes me wonder what her strengths will be. For girls it is definitely different though. Did you know that less than 15% of women enter college intending to major in STEM subjects. Many girls’ toys actually lag behind in the development of spatial skills, hands-on problem solving and confidence with technology. I definitely see that with a lot of my daughter’s toys already.
Well Roominate hopes to help girls (and boys) develop areas within STEM subjects. Roominate products use a unique blend of building, circuits, design, crafts, storytelling and creativity to teach kids while they play. The sets have motors, light circuits, modular furniture building pieces and walls. Roominate was actually designed by two female engineers in hopes of inspiring kids.
Roominate teaches:
- Hands-On Problem Solving
- Spatial + Fine Motor Skills
- Self-Confidence
- Creativity
- Basic Circuitry
I got the chance to check out the Roominate Studio. Since my daughter is young, my boys had no problem building it for her. The set comes with 70 pieces to build either a giant structure or multiple creations. It is a perfect set for hands-on, open-ended play! The pieces snap together to build your studio or whatever your child can dream up and then they can wire up the motor such as spinning windmills, carousels and elevators.
The set includes walls, furniture building pieces, motor, doll, pet puppy, screwdriver, craft paper and more. My 6 year old son was amazed at all the pieces and the variety. Usually building sets he has are just blocks but this one really inspires creativity since the pieces are far from just square blocks.
I think his favorite part though was the motor and seeing the windmill move. He was amazed that he created that. So even though this set is geared towards girls, my son enjoyed it. I will say though he did need some assistance getting started with everything but then he was fine on his own. What was nice though was my daughter watched him like a hawk and I could see her little brain taking it all in. I definitely see her interested being peaked. I want my daughter to be able to experience everything to see what her strengths are.
If your child really gets into Roominate, all the different sets can be built upon each other for more fun.
BUY IT: Roominate can be purchased direct from the Roominate website or Toys R Us, Walmart, RadioShack to name a few. Oh and you can even find Roominate on Amazon.
