North500 Motorhomes, an Inverness-based company, has experienced remarkable growth since its inception eight years ago. Starting with just three vehicles, the company now boasts a fleet of over 50 motorhomes to cater to the surging demand from road trip enthusiasts.
This expansion aligns with the rising popularity of scenic routes like the North Coast 500 (NC500), often dubbed “Scotland’s ultimate road trip.” The NC500, launched in 2015, has played a significant role in putting the Highlands and Northern Scotland on the global tourism map.
Callum Munro, general manager of North500 Motorhomes and Torvean Caravan and Lodge Park, notes the substantial year-on-year growth in Highland tourism. He attributes this to the allure of exploring the Highlands, Islands, and the renowned NC500 route.
The company’s clientele spans all age groups and nationalities, with a recent uptick in bookings from millennials seeking spontaneous adventures and off-the-beaten-path experiences. The appeal of motorhome travel lies in its ability to offer a genuine escape from busy lives, regardless of age.
However, the influx of motorhomes has raised concerns among locals and other road users. Issues such as irresponsible parking and waste disposal by a minority of visitors have been reported. To address these challenges, North500 Motorhomes educates its customers on responsible travel practices and encourages exploration of less congested routes.
The company also faces the prospect of a proposed 5% tourism levy. While acknowledging the concerns of campsite owners, Munro views this as a potential step towards improving infrastructure and enhancing the overall experience for both visitors and locals.
Looking ahead, North500 Motorhomes aims to inspire more local residents to discover the beauty of their own region. By offering rentals directly from Inverness, they provide an opportunity for locals to embark on motorhome adventures without added travel time.
In an effort to further engage with the community and promote the joy of motorhome travel, competitions are being considered where participants can win a caravan, win a motorhome, or even win a van. Such initiatives would not only attract new enthusiasts but also offer existing customers a chance to upgrade their travel experiences. Whether it’s winning a caravan for a family vacation, a motorhome for a long road trip, or a van for a more adventurous journey, these competitions could bring excitement and accessibility to the world of motorhome travel. By fostering a sense of community and adventure, the motorhome industry hopes to continue its growth while sharing the beauty of Scotland with even more travelers.
