I cannot imagine the position so many of our friends are in. Right now we have five sets of friends that are stuck in a townhouse. Two of those couples have kids and could definitely use more room. Two of the other couples bought a new house so they are paying two mortgages right now. The other couple has two dogs and are looking to start a family and are stuck in a one-bedroom townhouse!
Its strange, when my husband and I were looking at real estate a townhouse was not even something we considered. We knew we were going to start a family soon after and wanted a something to really make ours. Even though a townhouse is something you own, I didn’t like all the rules and associations that went along with them. I mean if I want to paint my garage blue I don’t want to have to ask others if that is okay! Don’t get me wrong, there are benefits of owning a townhouse but for us it just wasn’t worth it. I am so glad we bought a house first. Even with a bad housing market, it seems like houses have a better chance of being sold then townhouses. Too many townhouses look the same that they don’t’ stand out from one another other than the price.
We are in Illinois, near Chicago and luckily it seems like the housing market is picking up. If you are in Utah, there are some nice townhouses available in Park City, but our friends are all looking for houses in Illinois. I think everyone has gotten the whole townhouse thing out of their systems!
