MY THOUGHTS:
Summertime is a time for fun and playing with friends, but it is also a time that many kids forget what they learned in school. I know for me at least when I was in school, I did not think about anything educational. Well for my 3 year old it is different. He is considered Special Needs since he doesn’t talk (except mom) and he has some developmental issues. So he was able to get into a preschool program on his 3rd birthday through the school district and now he is actually in summer school. Yes my preschooler is in summer school.
I think it is important to use your mind and practice throughout the summer on school subjects, especially since finding out my son is a little behind. I not only want him to reach the level of his other classmates, but I want him to be as successful as possible in school. So thankfully his teacher has sent home some worksheets and ideas that we can work on at home this summer, but I was looking for more. I am by no means a creative person, and being a book lover, I always look to books for ideas. So when I heard about The Critical Thinking Company I was excited!
I was sent a Can You Find Me? Pre K – Building Thinking Skills, Reading, Math Science, Social Studies workbook. It is a workbook that has 100 activities in it, each page has a riddle on it that you have to decipher through using two or more clues to find the answer. The activities use animals, objects, shapes, letters, and numbers. They are very short and meant for a parent and child to work on together. For example, I would read the riddle to Aidan and work with him on the answer. The idea is to help your child think about the correct answer and why it is the right one. It is not a book that you color or work on puzzles or mazes, but you read it and answer the question.
I have decided that I am going to work on a few of these a week with Aidan (preferably one a day, once we get the hang of things) and hope that it starts to sink in. Aidan loves the riddles and pictures and I can see his little mind working as he tries to figure out the answer. I think by the end of the summer he will be a pro at this! I also like how the book can be reused since you are not drawing in it, you can redo the activities or share it with another child. It is paperback though so our book is showing some wear but I know we will get our use out of it. Some of the activities, Aidan has found that he wants to circle or cross out items which I let him do if it helps him get the right answer.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Critical Thinking Company workbook I received and love that they are not pushing facts or items to memorize, but focus rather on sharpening your brain!
