When my husband and I first got married, cell phones were popular but we still wanted a landline. Well when I say landline I don’t mind a traditional phone line but rather a voice over IP phone line. My husband is a techie and back then that was a new technology. We chose Vonage and stayed with them for seven years, yes we stuck with them through the good and the bad. Our bills though kept going up and up and I was actually downgrading our minutes to save money and still paying $30 a month. Now $30 a month may not sound like a lot but that’s $360 a year for something we didn’t really need to have. I was about to cancel the service all together until I came across BasicTalk Home Phone Service from Walmart. Yes who knew Walmart had a phone service! Is there anything you can’t get from Walmart?
Anyways, BasicTalk Home Phone Device is an easy-to-use affordable VOIP (voice over IP) home phone service. What that means is that this hooks into your cable modem (you have to have Internet) and you can use any regular phone with it. So for example, we have our BasicTalk box hooked into our cable modem and then I plugged a set of cordless phones into it and then spread the phones throughout the house.
How affordable is it? Well the BasicTalk box is less than $40 and you get your first month free! Then going forward it is only $9.99 per month! No crazy hidden fees!
How well does it work? Honestly I have had absolutely no problems! I had a seamless (almost too easy) transfer of my Vonage phone number to BasicTalk and within a few days I had our phone number back up and running. You do get a BasicTalk phone number assigned to you so you are not missing any phone service abilities but transferring a phone number is super easy and you can check on their website to see if your number is able to be transferred.
Features you get:
- High-quality voice service
- Unlimited domestic calling
- 911 calling available
- Transfer your current home phone number
- Voicemail
- Caller ID and Call Waiting
Here are some things though to note about BasicTalk:
- The service is great but the features are basic. I do miss the visual voicemail emails I would get from Vonage but for the low price of just $10 a month it was worth the change for me. I can still log in my BasicTalk account online from anywhere and see who called though and check my voicemail online. I love that I can do this from anywhere I have Internet!
- If the power or Internet goes out in your home, your phone service will not work since it requires both power and Internet service.
- You will have to hook up a phone to it, but any phone should work just fine. I like the cordless phone sets that you can expand up to a bunch of different handsets so you can put them all over the house.
- You do have to pay for the BasicTalk box itself but you get your first month of service free!
- If you’re worried about the quality, you can buy BasicTalk and set it up with the assigned number you get and try it out. If you don’t like it then you only wasted $40, if you do like it then you can transfer your phone number!
Overall, I love BasicTalk. Setting it up was as easy as taking it out of the box, plugging it in, and activating it online. Really its easy. To transfer my number I didn’t even have to call my previous phone provider (Vonage) I just verified through BasicTalk and they did the transfer for me. There has been no delays or issues in service and I can’t tell a difference between my previous phone provider to BasicTalk, other than the cost is now a lot cheaper! I am paying only $10 a month (plus taxes) compared to the lowest plan at Vonage which was $30 (after taxes.) I highly recommend BasicTalk!
