ABOUT:
A few weeks ago the City of Chicago declared the week “Think About Your Eyes” week. A group dedicated to informing the public about the importance of vision health, the Think About Your Eyes (TAYE) Coalition, has released a few surprising facts:
- Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms. As a result, individuals are often unaware that problems exist.
- One in four children has a vision problem that can interfere with learning and behavior, and half of all American children have not had a complete eye exam.
- Eye care experts say children should have their first eye exam before they can even walk.
- The American Optometric Association recommends a six month exam to make sure your baby’s eyes are developing normally and to stop bigger problems down the road. After that, a yearly trip to the eye doctor will keep tabs on young eyes that can change fast.
- In addition to correcting vision problems, annual eye exams can also reveal warning signs of more serious undiagnosed health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
MY THOUGHTS:
I got my first pair of glasses when I was in 7th grade and luckily my eyes are not that bad. I can see without my glasses but with them everything is definitely sharper. My husband is blind is a bat and had a very strong prescription, until he had lasik surgery. So since both my husband and I have vision problems I definitely worry about my kids vision. I had no idea how many kids have vision problems and that it can interfere with learning and development.
After checking around the Think About Your Eyes Facebook page and Website, I cannot believe how much I learned. I think vision problems are just not something people think about, I mean it goes Pediatrician and dentist for me, I never really thought about vision testing this early. I found the Think About Your Eyes Facebook and Website pages very informative and think that everyone can learn something from them!

I used to work in eye care and know how much we take our vision for granted AND that eye diseases, eye muscle problems in kids, etc can remain undetected and cause permanent damage. And that other bodily diseases like diabetes or MS can cause damage AND even help diagnose these problems by having an eye exam and seeing certain changes. I did go over and checked in the kids vision section:
According to the Vision Council of America, 1 in every 4 children has a vision problem that can interfere with learning and behavior.
I have seen firsthand that this is SO true and SO preventable so often!
thanks much! I’D wear that Tshirt proudly!
