Disclosure: I received the product below to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
At the recent 2015 Toy Fair in New York City there were many new toys introduced but one toy that stuck out was Moulin Roty’s Cinema Box. The creator of Cinema Box, Magicforest, had a booth that was constantly busy with everyone wanting to check out what Cinema Box was. I admit I was intrigued when I read the description.
“Storytelling and movie going are combined in this sweet kit, complete with a mini View-MasterTM mounted on a flashlight, five story disks to load and a bunch of tickets to distribute. Your movie lover can design a marquee on the “Now Showing” pad, invite her dolls to sit in the front row and then choose a film to show on the box’s cover. There’s a cowboy flick, a pirate tale, a superhero adventure and more; encourage your child to tell a story that matches the scenes. Enjoy the show!”
There are many things I like about right off the bat about Cinema Box but the main reason is it really sparks creativity for kids. With tablets, video games and other tech gadgets so easily available for kids, it can be hard to find a toy that really engages kids today.
I broke out Cinema Box for my three kids (ages 8, 6, and 3) and it was an immediate hit. My kids are already planning movies they are going to create for when family comes to visit. I feel like I am creating little Steven Spielbergs!
Cinema Box is a kit imported from France by Magicforest and designed for kids as young as 3 years old. Younger kids may need help with the tickets and if they want to write stories but otherwise the kit is pretty easy to operate. You just pop in the little discs and adjust the viewfinder if its blurry.

By limiting toys to the generic, lo-tech kind — blocks, art supplies, jumpropes — that can be used for hundreds of different things. I’d rather see the kids using their imaginations and playing store on a “counter” they made of sofa pillows, selling cans from the pantry and paying with torn-up scraps of old junkmail for “money”, than playing with a fancy kit that has all of that stuff included and that requires them to play in a certain way.
