I received the product below to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
I have been a LeapFrog fan since my oldest was born. First we started with the silly frog toy that hooked onto his carseat carrier and from then we moved onto interactive toys and then video games. It is amazing how much LeapFrog actually includes and how the products can grow with your child.
Recently I got a whole bundle of great products from LeapFrog to check out with my three kids and I will say even my 7 and 8 year olds who are getting up there at aging out of LeapFrog products still wanted to play with them! I think for them its a comfort thing since they grew up with LeapFrog products and the characters. Now my just turned 4 year old is moving up in to the new products and I love that LeapFrog keeps up with today’s favorites.
LeapTV
LeapTV is a video gaming system for kids ages 3-8 years old that gets them up and moving. It’s kinda like a Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect but designed with younger kids in mind. We actually have both of those systems but my daughter hasn’t grasped using them properly, which is why I love that I can start her off with her own system with LeapFrog. The games available for it are all educational but fun games that feature core curriculum and even voice instructions for non-readers. The system comes with the game Pet Play World so kids can play it without you having to buy games right away. Like a typical video game system, you can buy additional games for it via cartridges and game downloads.
The system comes with:
- LeapTV console
- Camera for console
- Mount
- Controller
- HDMI cable
- AC power adapter
- 16 GB of memory
- Built-in Wi-Fi/Ethernet port for downloads
- You do need to add your own AA batteries for the controller
As is typical with LeapFrog products, the LeapTV also allows the games to grow with your child. As your child progresses, the curriculum in the game progresses. I love this feature because it makes the games more challenging for kids so they don’t get bored. This is great too when you have more than one child playing as they can have their own player profiles. I will say the camera can be a little tricky if your child is not positioned right, but it will keep guiding them until they get in the right spot. Also, I wanted to add you do not need to be connected to the internet for this system to work, only if you want to do any updates or download games with the LeapFrog App Store do you need to connect via Wi-Fi.
To go along with LeapTV I got some great games that got my daughter up and moving in no time. Even my boys who are used to playing our other video game systems jumped in to play. They loved seeing themselves on the tv!
LeapTV Blaze and the Monster Machines
This is a great game geared toward kids who like cars and racing. The ages are 3-5 but even my 7 year old got hooked and was zooming around with this game. I love how STEM is built in to this game with the science of figuring out which ramp works the best and building stunt challenges. I can see their little minds turning as they figure out how to get from point A to point B – future engineers maybe? Kids also get to design a monster car and work on numbers and problem solving. There are lots of great science-packed activities in this game but the game to my kids is just fun fun fun. It is for 1-2 players if you have the extra controller.
LeapTV Disney Frozen
If you have a Frozen fan then this game is of course a must. It features Anna, Elsa and Olaf through games of numbers, matching and shapes. It is a Math focused game for kids ages 4-7 years old. My daughter has been mixing her numbers up and with this game she has been flying through her numbers. The game is for up to two players and there are five adventures to explore within the game. If your child has math down and isn’t a Frozen fan they probably wouldn’t gain anything from this game, but it is still cute to play and the animation is amazing.
LeapTV Disney Princess
This is a Disney Princess game that features six games and Cinderella and Rapunzel. Some of the other Disney princesses do make an appearance but the main ones are Cinderella and Rapunzel. This games is designed for ages 4-7 years old and focuses on reading. The games included phonics, the alphabet, sight words and spelling plus some princess activities like dress up. This game is only for one player. It is a very cute game with adorable animation that is sure to excite any kid to enjoying reading and letters. My daughter is not very good yet with her letters but she loves Disney Princesses so this has been a great way for her play with Disney Princesses while focusing on letters. My hopes is this year before kindergarten starts my daughter will get a good grasp on her letters and numbers and maybe even some reading, LeapTV really does make learning fun for kids and they don’t even realize they are learning because they are having so much fun!
LeapTV Doodlecraft starring Mr. Pencil
Doodle Craft is probably my kids favorite. It is a game where kids can express themselves through art and creative expression. Kids can build, draw, color and explore their creations. My kids love Mr. Pencil from the LeapFrog LeapPad game and this game reminds them of it. The game is designed for kids 4-7 years old and even though it is a drawing and artsy game, kids still need to move around to control the game. It is also for up to two players. It did take my kids a little bit to get used to the controls but once they did it was fine. This game is perfect for any child who wants to express themselves or even kids who like to build. You can really do a lot in this game and kids will learn while they play. There is sorting, classifying and spatial reasoning skills as well.
LeapTV Letter Factory Adventures
LeapFrog Letter Factory game is a classic reading game designed for kids ages 3-5 years old. It is similar to the Disney Princess LeapTV game but more gender neutral. This game has kids up and moving to form letters, pop bubbles, form words and work at their own level. It is a game that grows with your child, which is nice so kids are challenged as they get better. My kids love this game because they loved the Letter Factory DVD from LeapFrog. It is perfect for kids just learning their letters, spelling and sight words. You can play 1-2 players.
Other than video game systems and games, LeapFrog still makes amazing toys especially for kids learning their numbers and letters.
Word Whammer
Word Whammer is a toy that kids spin, tap, twist and more to spell words, match letters and pick the correct letter sounds. It reminds me of the Bop It toy but Word Whammer is both educational and fun. At $20, I think its a neat toy for any child ages 4-6 years old, perfect to get them ready for Kindergarten and 1st grade. I gave it to my 4 year old and she immediately had the thing figured out. She is still learning so she makes a lot of mistakes but I love seeing her try and pick it back up randomly throughout the day. I like to keep it in the car and it is a great way to keep her busy while learning.
LeapFrog Scout’s Build and Discover Tool Set
This is a fun LeapFrog toy that is perfect for curious little builders. It is a toolbox with toolbox that allows kids to take apart and re-build a toolbox. Kids practice with the five included plastic tools and learn how the tools work and which tool works best for each problem. Great for problem solving skills. The set is very colorful and kids need to match the right colored tool for each job. My boys also wanted to do whatever their daddy was doing and now with this set they can bring their own toolbox around the house to wherever dad is working. The toolbox also talks, sings and asks questions. It uses Scout’s very cute puppy voice. Cute toy for any little builder ages 2-5 years old. I will say though kids might get a little bored with it since there is only so much they can “fix” but the tools can be used around the house as pretend and it is still a cute toolbox to carry around.
LeapFrog Number Lovin’ Oven
This is a an adorable little play oven that says over 30 phrases and songs all about numbers and sharing. It is a great toy for kids to play with to keep them busy while mom is cooking. I know my kids love to play in the kitchen and with this toy my 4 year old can practice her numbers and get to cook some silly treats. I like that everything can store nicely in the oven for clean-up time. This toy also teaches about actual cooking because you have to measure, set the temperature, and it counts down like a timer. It is very simple with the numbers it teaches but the songs are super cute that my daughter enjoys it. My favorite feature though is how nicely everything fits inside, which so far so good she hasn’t lost anything. I would say this would be a great toy for kids 18 months and up, perfect to get kids started with their numbers.
