Hoot and Peep
Published: March 1, 2016
Hoot the owl is very excited for his little sister, Peep, to join him on the cathedral rooftops. She’s finally old enough to learn all his big brother owly wisdom: First, owls say hooo. Second, they always say hooo. Lastly, they ONLY say hooo! But why would Peep say hooo when she could say schweeepty peep ordingity dong? Why would she speak when she could sing? As she explores the breathtaking Parisian cityscape, Peep discovers so many inspiring sights and sounds—the ring of cathedral bells, the slap of waves on stone—that she can’t help but be swept up in the magic of it all. Hoot doesn’t understand Peep’s awe, until he takes a pause to listen . . . and realizes that you’re never too old to learn a little something new.
From the beloved author/illustrator of the classic picture book Red Sled, this gorgeous read aloud celebrates the wonder found in little things—and in the hearts of dreamers, young and old.
This is a picture book about two owl siblings where the older one wants to teach her younger sibling. It is a book all about imagination and creativity. I see the book too teaching how even young siblings can teach their older siblings a thing or two! It would be a great book for an older sibling to read to young siblings as it is an easily read picture book.
Echo Echo: Reverso Poems About Greek Myths
Published: February 16, 2016
What happens when you hold up a mirror to poems about Greek myths? You get a brand-new perspective on the classics! And that is just what happens in Echo Echo, the newest collection of reverso poems from Marilyn Singer. Read one way, each poem tells the story of a familiar myth; but when read in reverse, the poems reveal a new point of view! Readers will delight in uncovering the dual points of view in well-known legends, including the stories of Pandora’s box, King Midas and his golden touch, Perseus and Medusa, Pygmalion, Icarus and Daedalus, Demeter and Persephone, and Echo and Narcissus.
These cunning verses combine with beautiful illustrations to create a collection of fourteen reverso poems to treasure.
This is a picture book that would be great for older kids (maybe 7 and up) as it is a poem collection book that teaches about Greek myths. There are bigger words that younger kids wouldn’t understand, especially the names of the characters. On the other hand though the poems are easily read and younger kids might be able to still picture the stories. There is a beautiful illustration to go along with each poem and the bottom of the page has a few sentences that go more into depth into the characters.
Raybot
Published: March 22, 2016
When an inquisitive robot named Raybot begins to explore Earth, he knows he is supposed to find the thing that goes “bark.” But try as he might, all he can find are things that go “roar” and “oink” and “moo.” Still, Raybot keeps searching, and on the way, he discovers that Earth is full of interesting, friendly creatures. Children will relate to Raybot’s wonder as he discovers new sounds and animals in the world, and adults will appreciate the detail and beauty in the hand-painted illustrations.
This book is about a robot needing a friend. He goes on an adventure and meets some great animals along the way. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging. The book is a classic picture book with a great story. My kids ages 4-9 years old love the story and my oldest loves reading it to his little sister. I think this is a great picture book that will be a treasure in our collection.
