Okay so I am probably one of few who has yet to see AVATAR (don’t worry a review will be coming in the next week) but I have seen all the previews and read a few reviews on it. I also just learned that Avatar is not only being released on DVD & Blu-ray on Earth Day (April 22), but also is teaming up with the Earth Day Network.
By purchasing and entering a unique code found within the AVATAR Blu-ray/DVD, consumers can register at www.avatarmovie.com into “The AVATAR Program” and gain exclusive access to first-look bonus materials, special content, money saving offers and much more. Additionally, only those fans will be able to adopt one of the one million trees being planted on behalf of Earth Day and receive a virtual hometree they can locate on a map to see where it’s actually planted.
If you don’t already know, the premise of AVATAR is that a corporation is being greedy and wants to drive the Na’vi off their homeland on the planet, Pandora. Their homeland is on top of a precious mineral that the corporation wants to mine and basically make money off of. So basically it is like the government telling us to pick up and move now because under our house is minerals that they want. How crazy is that!
Blue Goes Green
Earth Day Network will spearhead the initiative and collaborate with its international partners to plant one million trees, indigenous to each region in 15 different countries, by the end of 2010. The organization is committed to caring for and nurturing the trees to maturity, as well as considering natural disasters such as fires and landslides during the planting process.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to share the environmental messages from AVATAR through the efforts during the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day and with Earth Day Network,” said James Cameron. ” Earth Day Network’s commitment and actions to promote a healthy, sustainable planet go hand-in-hand with the themes of AVATAR.”
“AVATAR sends a universal message about the danger of exploiting our natural resources and brings to the forefront of the global consciousness the need to protect our planet and humanity, said Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network. “We hope this commitment from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to plant one million trees, will inspire others to stand up against climate change for Earth Day.”
WAYS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY and AVATAR
I think it is awesome that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Earth Day Network have teamed up to plant one million trees across the globe by the end of 2010, but there are plenty ways to help out on a smaller scale in your own home!
- RECYCLE – the more we recycle, the less that ends up in landfills, which wastes land and other resources crucial to the environment.
- RE-USE – Rather than throwing away something, or recycling it, see if you can re-use it. For example, my son’s school has all the parents saving plastic bottle caps and lids which will then be used to make Earth Day necklaces!
- Plant your own tree or better yet, start a garden!
So in honor of Earth Day, get outside rain or shine and enjoy nature and all of its gifts. Today is it’s day and without nature, where would we be?

I like the tree initiative–it almost makes it worth the amount of energy and resources wasted when they re-release the movie in 3d later this year!
