    Old Navy “Attendance Pledge Initiative” Story (& Giveaway Ends 10/13)

    ABOUT:

    Old Navy has just launched a new initiative to help boost attendance at schools in the Chicago Public School District.  Old Navy has asked students to pledge to go to school every day.  To start off the initiative they recently awarded 200 lucky students who took the “attendance pledge” on August 31st at the State Street Old Navy location, $50 gift cards and special discounts to kick-off the school year in Chicago.  To further encourage students to attend daily, Old Navy will give gift cards to all students at the four Chicago Public Schools (Wentworth, Oglesby, Westcott and Woods Elemtary schools) who participated in the kick-off if they receive perfect attendance at the end of the year.

    MY THOUGHTS:

    Now even though this is something that Old Navy is doing for Chicago Public Schools, I think it is a great way to give back and I hope initiatives like this spread.  I am not sure how it is in other areas, but I know here in Chicagoland attendance is always an issue so I think this is a great way to get kids interested in perfect attendance and encouraging attendance in general.

    My son is just in pre-school but I do feel it is important for him to go everyday and I will hopefully instill that in him as he grows.  School is five-days a week for a reason and it is a great way for kids to further their future and stay out of trouble, especially here in Chicagoland.  Also, back to school clothes shopping is so important to kids and whether your school was chosen for the Old Navy opportunity or you just shop there, you will always get a great deal!

      our school has a policy that once you miss a few days the school sends out a notification, and theres only a certain number of days you can miss (even if a parent kept a child home sick) before you get expelled for the year

      I make sure my kids are attending class everyday by always picking them up/dropping them off and by emailing and calling and meeting with their teachers if I need to 😀

      We would know very quickly from the school if there were any problems with them not attending. At this point in their life, they are too young to consider “skipping”

      My daughter’s school is very strict about attendance, so we are notified right away if she weren’t to get to her classes.

      we make sure to set the alarm because if we dont we might oversleep and my daughter gives him a ride to school 🙂

      I’m not a mother of someone who attends school. However, I am a foster mom of a special needs woman. She has to go to workshop daily so that she might be able to socialize and learn skills. I make sure she does by having her following a morning routine, so she is well in the habit.

      I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INVOLVED IN MY CHILDREN’S EDUCATION FROM KINDERGARTEN TIL THEY GRADUATED COLLEGE, I NOW HAVE A WRITER AND A NURSE PRACTIONER. I COULD NOT BE PROUDER AT HOW SUCCESSFUL THEY BOTH ARE.ALWAYS ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN THAT THEY CAN BE WHAT EVER THEY WANT TO BE.

      My daughter is in grad school and I keep in touch with her via phone and e-mail. She’s always made it to class. I’ve never had to worry about that!

      I establish a good rapport with each of my kids’ teachers so they know how important I feel education is. I always talk to my kids about the importance of being in school each day. This has been especially challenging as I have a daughter with a chronic illness. She still tries very hard not to miss school even though she feels ill most of the time!

      Making sure our child attended classes was understood in our home. We discussed the homework and her day everyday when she got home. She is now in college and is flabbergasted that students don’t attend class. It has to start in the home and has to be an expectation sealed with love!!!!

      Ensuring they get plenty of sleep the night before, and that they dress appropriately (so they don’t get sick) are two ways I ensure the kids make it to school. The former is really important with the teen who sometimes has a tendency to want to get up and play video games AFTER mom and dad have gone to sleep.

      I didn’t have a problem with my children attending school. I was always in close contact with the school secretary so I was made aware very quickly if any issues came up. Fortunately they enjoyed going to school so there were no problems.

      LOL – my daughter is a senior in High School. She has the opportunity to go to an all-day session at the college she wants to go to for the subject she wants to major in, and she doesn’t want to miss a day of school to go to it. Skipping classes doesn’t come up in our house. Plus, the school calls us to tell us when our kids miss class (which is more like when there’s a sub and they don’t know how to take attendance).

      I volunteer a lot and work as a sub aide at my childrens school regularly so I know if they are in class or not.
      So far I have had no problems even with my older children.
      I have tried to instill in them how important school is to their futures.

      my kids attend school unless they are sick (I dont want to get others sick) appt for doc and dentist are scheduled on Saturdays I also have a rule if you are home sick you will stay in bed ALL day they usually remember that and change their mind about how they want to stay home

      When my son was in school, I stay involved as a parent. i was fortunate that he attended a small high school where the secretary would call during the day to check on kids that were absent. She had the parents work numbers too

      I’m going to encourage my children to attend school everyday by staying active in their lives so that if they are having any problems that make them want to miss school we can talk about them and hopefully work them out.

      I make sure before we leave in the morning that everyone has eaten a balance breakfast so their minds are alert, I drive them to school and are always in contact with the teachers to stay in the know of my children’s progress.

      Skipping has never been an issue with us thank goodness- I don’t know whether it’s luck or the fact that when they need a mental health day as long as they aren’t behind I never made an issue of it.

      We live out in the middle of nowhere and our junior and senior high school is located in the middle of a cornfield. They don’t really skip school here because they have nowhere to go. Even our bus stop is right down the street so all I have to do is watch out the window as she gets on the bus. I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about her skipping.

      My kids love school, and our school system sends us an email everyday letting us know what our kids homework is –if your child was late or not at school they let you know in your daily email.

      I make sure my kids eat fresh fruit every single day and get plenty of rest (they’re rarely sick)

      We are both notified almost immediately (via our cell phones) if our children are tardy/absent, as well as ill or unruly! 😉

      My kids school requires a note each time they are absent, if they are absent and do not bring in a note, the teacher will call home, thanks for the chance!

      I keep my children healthy via good hygiene, good nutrition, and good physical condition. My stay in close touch with my children’s teachers to ensure they have a strong support system. 🙂 Thank you.

      My kids went to private schools. The teachers kept close tabs on attendance, and any absentees would be reported to the office, who in turn would call me. Not many worries about my kids skipping class.

      I don’t have to worry about my daughter, she LOVES school and I have to force her to stay home when she’s sick!!! My son, is the opposite, and we have resulted to “grounding” him from playing outside or video games if he tries to stay home and he’s not really sick! So far, it’s worked, I just wish he liked school as much as his little sis does!

      My little guy is in kindergarten. I stand at the bus stop with him in the mornings and I’m there waiting for him in the afternoons. His teacher sends home daily reports…so there’s no way he can skip. 😉

      My kids are grown, but they went to private school, and if they weren’t in class, there would be a call from the “office” asking where they were. The faculty kept close tabs on who was and wasn’t in class. The kids knew it, so skipping class wasn’t an option they chose to try.

      Our school system actually has something in place where a recorded message will call parents if the child misses any part of school that day. I think this is a great deterrent for children not attending school. Fortunately, my kids enjoy attending school so far. Thanks.

      It’s pretty easy for us. We have a website that we can check for attendance, to view test scores and to see assignments turned in. We usually get an email from a teacher whenever a major event happens reminding us to check the results.

      All of the students in the family right now are in college, so it is up to them to make certain they get to class. This is especially true since none of them are straight out of high school–they have had the experience of having to be punctual for jobs and have made the personal decision to complete their educations.

      My child knows that if she stays home from school she has to stay in bed all day, no toys, no tv. If she is really sick she should be resting. This has really cut down on the faking sick because I just don’t want to go to school days.

      My kids haven’t started school yet but when theya re old enought to go I’m hoping the shcool has one of those online checking systems like the one mama’s school has. When I was in school they didn’t have that kind of stuff.

      My kids are in elementary school so they love school and are there everyday unless sick at home. Now Jr high and HS I don’t have a clue and am preparing for that kind of thing now by reading and talking with other parents to see what they do. Also trying to instill in my kids an early love for education.

      We stress that school is very important, and even though some days it may be hard, and you don’t like it, you have to go. When she gets older and “cutting class” maybe be the issue we would make sure that all her teachers know to call/email us if she is missing class. We would have to start taking away her privledges such as phone, tv, computer (except for school work) etc.

      I don’t have kids. but I go to school myself. I have a full time job and go to school part time in the evenings and sometimes take online courses. It’s hard to go to class after working 8 hours then sitting in class from 5:30 -9pm. But I just keep telling myself it’ll pay off in the end.

      Since we live several miles from school, I drive my daughter to school every morning, so I know she’s getting there on time. And, since she first started school, I’ve instilled in her pride in her perfect attendance records! She REALLY wants to keep it perfect!

      I don’t have children in school at this time, but I think it’s a good idea to be in contact with their teachers, check with the kids on what homework they have and just asking what they learned in class that day is a good way to keep track and make sure they are going to class.

      I get my kids ready in the morning and deliver them to school or to the bus. They are in elementary school and so far they enjoy school a lot, so it’s not a worry that has crossed my mind that they would try to sneak out or avoid being in class in any way.

      My kids are grown, but they all went to private schools. If they didn’t show up for class, the teachers reported it to the administration, who checked the “absentee lists” for the day. Parents were called if there was a ‘missing’ student.

      I think talking with your child daily about school and making sure they know you are right on top of them, you should not have much problems.

      My son has already missed 5 days of school due to pneumonia. It is so hard to know what is going to happen health wise. His father and I make sure that he has his homework completed, clean clothes and nothing bad happened that would make him want to stay home.

      I don’t have to be extremely vigilant because our school has a policy of calling the parents if the children are not in class. However, one thing I do is to check the website to make sure my son is turning in all his homework and projects and I make sure they get to the bus on time.

      This is such a great idea and program to encourage kids to attend school.
      I encourage my kids by getting up with them each morning, helping them get ready, feeding them a nice breakfast and then seeing them off. I make sure that each get on the bus safely.
      My kids know that we take school seriously and homework too. Both come first in our home, before play. The only way they get off, if for sickness or a doctor/dentist appointment sometimes.

      My daughter isnt quite in school yet but I have thought extensively about this very topic. I will make sure the school knows to call me each and every time my daughter is marked absent. I will make sure to drive her to the bus stop and pick her up. There will always be someone there to make sure she is where she should be.

      I’m pretty lucky (i guess) in that in our county if your child misses a day of school you get a phone call that evening from the school (it’s an automated message) that informs you that your child wasn’t in school that day..I thought it was a great idea!!

      Lil Man is in Head Start and Lil Bit is in Early Head Start. This is their second year attending these early start programs and we ‘hype’ up what they mean to the boys education. We get excited about school and about learning and we take time every evening to talk about what happened at school that day and to review anything sent home. We also put together a scrap book of all the papers they bring home and art projects they do. I drop them off every morning and pick them up ever afternoon. They are anxious to go every morning and we talk about the importance of getting a good education and that it’s never to early to start learning.

      My son’s school has a computer program where you can look up to see grades and attendance. I signed up for weekly updates so I know what’s going on and can address it as soon as possible if necessary.

      My children are not attending school yet but when they do I plan to be involved with their education as much as possible. I think an actively involved, genuinely interested parent (without being pushy and pressuring) can do wonders for a child’s desire to want to learn.

      Well the alternative for not attending school is not pretty but I think it’s a great idea to issue incentives for going to school. My child loves books so if she attends school everyday for one month we can get a book each month of her choice.

      I guess I’d just try to stay involved with my child’s school life and teachers. I don’t know how else to keep track of their attendance.

      I will make sure by sending him on the private bus every day (driver makes sure they get in safely) and by making sure he stays healthy and eats well so he doesn’t miss school from being sick.

      I homeschool, so attendance is much easier for us. But, when my kids attended public school about the only way I could convince them to go when they didn’t want to was to assure them that they were going to arrive at school (kicking and screaming if need be) wearing whatever they had on at departure time (whether it be underwear or jammies). Would I have gone through with it? NO. Did they know that? (Evil chuckle) Nooooo.

      My son is in first grade so I walk him to class each and every morning. I make sure he is in his classroom before I turn around to leave.

      Well, my daughter is not in school yet, but when she is I am going to take her word for it until she gives me reason not to trust her—then if I have to I will drive her to school everyday.

      My kids are still very young so as long as I take them to school everyday, they are attending classes. I try to make sure that they aren’t sick with a stomach ache or colds or something that would cause them to miss any days of school.

      My daughter will just be starting preschool this winter, but I already try to instill the importance of learning in her. We have already talked to her about going to school and how important it is to have an education. Whenever she sees a school bus, she says that she will be going on the bus as soon as she gets bigger.

      I will make sure that my kids are in class every day by staying in close contact with the teacher and being a good parent. The teachers should have my phone number and my email address so that we can work together to best benefit my child:)

      My kids are still young (1st grade and preschool) and I walk them both to their class everyday. They both love school so far, so attendance is not a problem. As they grow older, we will do our best to instill a continuing love for education in them.

      I make sure my childrens vaccines are always up to date and we always wash our hands constantly to prevent spread of germs and illness.

      I really don’t have any kids, but if I did, I probably would give them incentives-Attend classes and at the end of each month we’ll do something fun as a family like go to dinner or go out bowling.

      I am a 64 year old grandmother with no children in school. When the kids were in school there wasn’t the worry there is today with kidnapping etc. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

      Two of my children are homeschooled; thus there isn’t ever a reason for them to miss school 🙂

      The other two attend a public school and daily vitamin, a healthy diet, proper sleep, and tea tree oil in their shampoo keep them healthy and germ/bug free.
