My husband played hockey as a child, as did his dad, and his grandfather, yeah you get the picture. So of course my boys were destined to play hockey. Luckily they seem to like it but it is definitely something new for me, since I am totally clueless about being a hockey mom! One thing I have had to adjust to is dressing my boys for being on the ice regardless of the weather outside. So in the summer even though the temperature was 90 degrees outside I had to dress them in pants and send a coat with. My boys adjusted pretty quickly to the craziness of the temperatures but still I have to remind them about the coldness of the ice.
Now it actually seems like its colder outside then skating on the ice, especially when they are practicing hard and working up a sweat. A staple item I keep in their hockey bag is a package of Kleenex. It never fails that one of them has a runny nose during or after practice. I’d actually be surprised it they didn’t because of the crazy temperature changes. Its a silly item that my husband wouldn’t think of but as a mom I know how nice Kleenex is compared to the rough paper towels or napkins they have laying around at the ice rink. Kleenex keeps my boys’ noses clean and contains the germs they hopefully spread less (compared to thin napkins that break when you wipe with them.)
Some items to keep handy for your little (or big) sports player:
- Kleenex
- Bandaids
- Neo-sporin (or something to kill germs before applying a bandaid)
- Chapstick (you’d be surprised how much my boys ask for this!)
- Extra set of clothes
- Extras depending on sport type
- Snacks
- Water
So whether your child plays hockey, baseball, football or another sport, make sure you prepare a kit to always be prepared!
