Disclosure: I received this product in exchange for my honest opinion.
Okay so I have three kids and hoenstly there are times I can’t watch all three at once. Whether I’m outside with 1 or 2 of them, somewhere on the other side of the house or not even at home, it is nice to have peace of mind that I can take a peak at what they are doing. When I think back to the traditional baby monitor I had with my first child, I laugh. Video? Yeah right! I was lucky if I even heard my child on the baby monitor and not some strangers conversation! Nowadays there are video cameras that whether we need a baby monitor or just want an extra pair of eyes, I can be covered.
Dropcam is the latest in home video camera technology as it is a cloud based HD video quality camera. The features on this little camera make it pretty amazing! It also brags of a 60 second set-up and while I was skeptical, it amazingly set-up literally in a minute! All I had to do is open the box, connect the Dropcam to my camera and set up the Wi-Fi, name the camera while setting up an account online and put it in its place. Seriously I had no troubles setting this little lady (yes I declared it a girl) up. The size is perfect and it can be placed standing up on a shelf or even mounted to the wall with the included plate.
All the Features:
- Quick setup – seriously super fast and easy!
- HD video quality – 720p video and wide angle lens so you can see details
- Two-way radio – The camera has a built-in microphone and speaker so you can use it as a two-way radio
- Mobile apps – Yes of course there is an app for it! (iPhone, iPad or Android)
- Bank-level security – stream safely with state-of-the-art SSL encryption
- Night vision – It has an automatic infarared LED so you can see even when its dark in the room
- Location aware – turn on and off based on your location
- Scheduling – Turn on and off based on the time of day
- Digital zoom – Focus in on one area of the room
- Optional Sharing – Share your stream with your friends or make it public and show the world!
- Activity Alerts – Receive motion and sound alerts by email or device notifications
- Automatic updates – No hassle or paying extra for updates!
- Optional: Dropcam DVR – you can pay a monthly (yearly) subscription cost to access the footage and make clips of the past 7 or 30 days.
What I especially love about the Dropcam though is how seriously easy it is to use wherever I need it. Primarily I keep it in my 2 year olds room so I can keep an eye on her at night and naptime, but I have used it aimed out the front and back windows so if I am somewhere else I can keep an eye on the outside and kids! Like the other day I was cleaning the kitchen and the kids wanted to play in the front yard, with my Dropcam aimed out the front window I was able to watch them while doing the dishes!
Here is the camera with night vision, I can see that Olivia is looking at a book:
And here it is in the daytime looking from my computer:
All I need to use Dropcam now is an outlet since its already connected into my Wi-Fi. I plan to set this up by our front door for when we go on vacation and oh did I mention you can get alerts to your phone or device when there is motion detected! So if someone happens to come through my front door when were out, I’ll get an alert that motion was detected!
So yes this is not a baby monitor, it is a video camera in general perfect for any room or occasion. Whether you want to watch your child(ren) or watch your house, Dropcam is seriously the way to go. The ability to also record it on a cloud based DVR for a small fee is a bonus! I am thinking of buying at least one more since you can connect multiple ones and this way I don’t have to keep moving my one out of my daughters room. Actually it would be nice to have one in my basement too so I can keep an eye on the kids when they go down there too!
BUY IT: Dropcam can be purchased for $149 from the Dropcam website or on Amazon.
WIN IT: (1) US winner will receive a Dropcam ($150 value)
