Getting your child to sleep can either be something you love and cherish or dread, lets me honest here. My middle child was terrible to put to bed when he was still in diapers. He cry for a pacifier, for his milk, for a new diaper, for another book or just because. It broke my heart every time I had to leave the room while he cried out for me. My daughter who is now 2.5 years old though is amazing to put to bed. We read three books, she gets a little milk in her sippy (trying to phase this out though) and one of her baby dolls to sleep with. She lays right down. Lately though she has been getting up earlier than I’d like because of a full of pee diaper. She doesn’t leak through but its about to.
With Daylight Savings Time a lot of moms and dads worry how that will affect their children’s sleep habits. Will they wake up earlier/later than normal? Will they leak through the diaper? How long before sleep routines go back to normal? Did you know that 52% of moms feel that their baby’s sleep patterns are thrown off when the clock ‘falls back’ and Daylight Savings Time ends? I had no clue that many moms felt that way, I certainly do!
The one tip I have in general with helping your baby sleep better though is to use a good diaper. Now I know diapers are expensive and but a good diaper can really make the difference in keeping your child in bed longer. For example what I do to save money is I will use a store brand or cheaper brand during the day when I can change my daughter right away but at night I use a more expensive diaper that is thicker, softer and more absorbent.
Pampers Baby Dry is a good one as it offers up to 12 hours of overnight protection in sizes 1-6. A dry baby is a happy baby, whereas one that wakes up from overloading pee may be crabby and irritated down there.
Some features include:
- An “Ultra Absorb” core to cover up to 95% of overnight loads.
- Most absorbent Baby Dry ever (sizes 2-5) with a 15% increase in capacity.
- Three layers of absorbency vs. two (the amount found in ordinary diapers).
- A longer absorbent area and new, fun graphics.
- Snug, stretchy sides, colored tabs and a belted design to reassure parents that the diaper will hold up.
Sleep expert, Kim West, has some tips on making a smooth transition during Daylight Savings Time:
- Slowly start adjusting your child’s naptimes an hour earlier, just 15-30 minutes a day for a few days before daylight savings ends.
- Quality nighttime sleep is dependent upon good daytime sleep, so don’t skip or skimp on naps.
- Consider installing blackout curtains and using a sound machine.
- Use dramatic wake up to help your children adjust to the change.
- Change your child’s diaper right before bedtime or naptime,
- Get outside or keep blinds open right before naps.
- Stick to a flexible schedule.
- The end of daylight savings is a good time to decided whether your child’s bedtime is age appropriate – too early or too late?
- Rely on a soothing bedtime routine.
